Strange noise in B100 DA

I discovered a hissing noise today, but have trouble finding the reason for it.
I have fine constant noise in the treble, even when the amp is muted. The noise remains constant whether the amp is muted, or on and volume all the way down. Its also the same on all inputs.
Pulling the input cables from the left channel still left noise in left speaker.
I also tried pulling the cable TV antenna for the tv...

Hi niels,

If you swap the speaker cables?

My system has always been like that. Mind you, you can only hear the 'hiss' is your ear is right next to the tweeter. If I hit mute on the SP1.7, though, the hiss is reduced significantly.

I just always thought it was normal.

Hmm, yes, I did see another thread here about noise, but that involved the Bryston cd player also, and I think he resolved the case.
I didnt try other speaker cables, the ones I use now are screened solid core electrical cables.
I didnt really notice a difference in the hiss when the amp was turned all the way down versus muted. I also tried to disconnect all other electrical items in the living room, listening every time I unplugged something.
Maybe it is normal yes.

Hi niels,

There is electrical noise (thermal noise floor of the system) which is there if you put your ear close to the speaker (depending on the Gain in the system and the Efficency of the speakers) but it should not be heard at the listening location.

Yes, its probably normal then. I have no other issues with noise, as far as I know.
I do run wireless sound however, and stumpled upon this from Chapter Audio :

"Verse Two Cable Features:
RF Interference is deadly to good sound! With a wireless LAN transmitter in the vicinity, the sound quality of most high-end systems dipped vastly. The majority of airborne RF pickup takes place at
the input stage of the equipment (which usually has a very high impedance) where it meets the incoming (audio carrying) cable.

Almost all Hi-Fi equipment is the same in this respect, with the input signal meeting a MOSFET or transistor pair which (when slew limiting) does a great job of folding down any RF products into the audio band.
To gain the best performance from any high-end equipment it is vital that the audio signal is carefully screened and shielded from RF interference whilst providing a great signal conductor and return.
We have worked with microwave engineering experts to create a shielding
system that virtually eliminates RF pickup in the cables.
This principle remains true throughout the system.

The Loudspeaker cables are often thought of as only a high power conductor, but they are also an aerial that runs directly to the most corruptible
point inside the amplifier; the feedback point, and thus it is vital that these also are shielded."

I came to think of the Cardas rca caps, maybe its not a bad idea to cover unused inputs with them ?
Would like to hear some comments.....

I wonder, does this radiation issue also include sources from wireless home telephones and cell-phones?

By the way, several times I've been very close to making a Bryston purchase, so this hiss thing caught my attention. This is the first I've heard about hiss from Bryston components (I just can't accept any hiss or buzz/hum from my stereo pieces).

I do note those ML speakers of niels are 90db efficient at 4 ohms... would this hiss problem be reduced with less efficient speakers? :?:

HI Newbuyer,

Bryston has one of the lowests noise floors available.

Like James said, you have nothing to worry about. It is however vital you audition Bryston if you can, only then can you hear it for yourself and make up your mind. If money fell from the sky, and I wanted a new amplifier today, I can tell you I would go with Bryston again.

With my Bryston amps, I can hear no noise at all from my listening position with no music playing. If it were not for the power light indicators I would not know the stereo was on.

Just so no-one misinterprets me, neither do I.

I am wondering please, can any of you hear any noise even when you approach much closer to your speakers? If so, about how close do you need to be, before hearing any hiss/hum?

I only ask this because I am currently in preparation to audition the Bryston SST stereo amps (and perhaps even the PowerPac SST's) for my next amplifier purchase. I'm a bit spoiled because my current non-Bryston amp is dead silent, no hiss noise at all, until your ear is literally less than one inch away from the tweeter in an absolutely silent room (I don't recommend listening that close! :) )

Yep, that's exactly the way it is with Bryston, too. I'm sure you can hear it before you are an inch away....but you have to be right next to the tweeter in order to hear it.
