I stopped at the ShopRite on the way home tonight and bought a pack of these and have been listening to vinyl since dinner.  These have a very dramatic and positive effect on playback.  They are a somewhat quilted, soft fabric that is described as an electrostatic cloth.   I 've been turning on my Technics and lightly holding the cloth on the LP surface as it spins.  I am hearing much more detail and better micro-dynamics in addition to greatly reduced surface noise.  I suspect that the cloth is picking up all the the very fine dust and the static is just eliminated which allows the cartridge to do what it does that much better.  I'm listening to "the reminde'r by Feist and all the cliches apply- though I know this record pretty well, there are musical nuances that I just never heard before.  There is a clarity to the music which is quite dramatic.  Wiping my records w/ this cloth really does help.
Its cheap, I don't think it can harm your records.  Give it a try and let me know your impressions, I like what it does very much.

I'll try the cloths, but I've been using this duster lately after having one of those "discovery" moments while dusting my rack.  I bought one for record use only... but discard the spray!!!  It's incredibly soft and pick up the dust as well as the damp methods. :)

:duh: How did I miss this! I'm not sure this would replace  wet cleaning but sure would be welcome if it tackles both dust and static.  :thumb:

For that matter - how about this?  The California Car Duster.

The Original California Car Duster® literally works like magic. It utilizes the proven technology of baking a special paraffin wax into 100% cotton strands to assure that dust is lifted and removed, not just pushed around.

It won't replace wet cleaning but instead of brushing, clean with the Pledge sheets.  It is just a huge improvement.

John:
Try it before making fun.

Not knowing what kind of crud this thing is depositing on a record, there
is no way I'm using it for my records. Not taking a chance of icky stuff
making it's way up the cantilever on my new Dynavector.....

I'm not making fun - I own a California Car Duster and it's like magic on my car.  Wax covered cotton fibres sound as innocuous as Pledge wipes for records.

Living on the West Coast and having mostly hardwoods, however, I have nearly zero static issues after wet cleaning...so I'm not a good candidate for either Pledge or CCD.

Someone should try it - it'll pull dust from the record surface and probably does not add static cling to it.

Just a bit too large and cumbersome...

To avoid any further misrepresentations, the Pledge sheets are dry.  They remove dust and static. They leave no residue on the records.  They don't cost very much either so they probably won't be of interest to you.

lcrim,

Pledge is on the wife's shopping list today. This is a great application for an existing technology. I certainly will give it a test. Perhaps it will help keep dust off of the dust cover as well.

Doing some more searching around, rather than Pledge sheets (or California Car Duster) I might just buy one of these to try - it's been discussed in vinyl forums before.

Hell, at the price and availability of Pledge sheets, I might try that as well  :thumb:

This is more expensive than the Pledge sheets, shipping alone can buy you 3 packs of Pledge sheets already...

What's the difference between this "Pinnacle Mitt" and the regular microfiber cloth available at Walmart??

I've proclaimed the use of a Swiffer duster for years as a "quick fix".
