a mix of Mac/ Windows, using FLAC
« on: 30 Apr 2008, 07:19 am »
Hi

(The plan is playing the same lossless files via a mix of Mac/ Windows pcs in 3-4 adjacent rooms, connected via a shared router to a master EHD - a Buffalo NAS).

I was in two minds whether to make the primary music player a Mac or a PC.
MP3Toys for PCs has several nice features, including lyrics search (I think it can be automatic), http://www.mp3toys.net/ and  http://www.mp3toys.net/v25news.html
It supports WMA, OGG, FLAC and M4A.
I’d like to use MP3Toys on one machine - my wife’s (she’d like the interface).

Max for Macs can generate FLAC, AAC, Apple Lossless, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, AIFF and WAVE.

Play supports FLAC, WavPack, Apple Lossless etc

iTunes: AAC, Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF, FLAC “in Ogg container”9 http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=ITunes).

The only common format is FLAC.

Any reservations or advice about sharing that way, with FLAC?

Thanks

Based on Crimson recommending its interface, Cog http://cogx.org/features.php
& FLAC could be the Mac player . .

Cheers

I did?

It's a great player, but I'm a hard core iTunes user because of it's ability to access shares and stream to multiple devices.

Hi

Are you saying that Cog and Play can’t share and stream to multiple devices?  :o

Thanks

I'm not familiar with Play, but Cog cannot connect to multiple shares simultaneously, nor can it stream to multiple devices.

To clarify:
The aim is to use one Buffalo NAS, and each of 3-4 Mac/ Windows pcs in adjacent rooms to at different times, access that NAS.

Ideally:
 - when using the Windows pcs, they’ll run MP3Toys (recognizing added tags), and
 - the Mac to run iTunes/ Play/ Cog.

Does that sound doable?

Thanks

You shouldn't have any problems. Just remember to back up!
