LS 9 placement in the room for best bass response
« on: 29 Apr 2008, 08:06 pm »
Got a couple of questions about where to place LS9s in a room.  I've searched and found posts and advice about how far to sit away from the speakers, but I couldn't find anything about placement of the speakers for smoothest overall bass response.

My room: 15'w X 29'1"L X 7'8" sloping to 8'3" H ceiling.  The ceiling has beams running cross ways along the 15' wide section.

Here are my questions:

The LS9s are ported so what frequencies are coming out of the ports?
What are the lowest frequencies coming out of the woofers from the front?

I'm trying to figure out the math for initial placement in the room so that I don't place them where bass frequencies will be reinforced by peaks in response given a certain location.

I hope this makes sense and I'm not totally off by asking this.

Thanks!

Josh - I just finished using Alan Maher's method here  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=45312.450

Wonderful improvement in overall sound and the low end got dialed in and has noticeably improved!

Highly recommend as a starting point.  The full outline and test tracks are on his website.

Thanks Art.

Does he cover my questions?  I see he's using the Cardas' method at quick glance, but that requires measuring only from the front of the speaker, but that isn't where all the bass comes from.  Or am I wrong about being concerned about that?

Josh, it won't answer your questions about frequencies coming out of the front and ports, but it goes beyond the Cardas math with steps and specific tracks to dial in low end, image size, etc.

It really did wonders for me in my setup.  Apologies, I don't understand the science behind any of it, I just know how to follow instructions.

I use the listen and move them technic myself. Some of that software will get you pretty close but you still may need to do some tweaking afterward.

As for a couple of your questions:

The LS9s are ported so what frequencies are coming out of the ports?

They are tuned to 25Hz but you'll get a little output to either side of that point as well.

What are the lowest frequencies coming out of the woofers from the front?

Without being more than 3db down I'd say around 20Hz.

Thanks Danny.

I guess I just don't understand how much output we should be getting from the rear ports.  Do I need to take it into account or just follow the method Art used and then make adjustments from there?

How much output is hard to quantify. It depends on how loud you play it.  :D

I'd start with what Art suggested. Getting them dialed in won't be as hard as you think.

Keep us posted Josh....as Danny said, it's not too bad getting them dialed in, just takes a bit of the fun kind of work...

I will.  I'll post some pix too.  :)

Still waiting to get them from AV123   I'm not much of a woodworker sadly, so I couldn't build them myself.
