Guilty Pleasures - (Music, that is . . .)
« on: 28 Apr 2008, 01:47 pm »
Okay boys, time to fess up.  I just listened to a song I stumbled upon years ago - at least I assume it's a song - but I've always loved it, but would never try and turn any of my friends onto it.  Thought it would be an interesting post subject:

Guilty Music Pleasures:

Vangelis: Albedo 0.39

This is essentially a 5 minute narrative of freakin' earth related statisics.  Things like escape velocity, distance from the sun, exact length of a year, orbital speed, etc., slowly read by some English guy, with Vangelis playing synthesizers in the background, but I just love the stupid thing.  Albedo, as I learned from this "song", is the measurement of (reflective power) sun light reflected by the surface of the earth.  So I get a physics refresher every time I listen!  Guess I'm an egghead at heart . . . either that or it's just one long lasting flashback to the 70's.  (shudder)

I have others but this one is probably the most unusual.  Who's next?

I know that one, I picked up a Vangelis greatest hits album awhile back.  I can't remember why, but I've got it.  The Albedo tune is indeed cool, although I wouldn't consider it a guilty pleasure necessarily.  Vangelis had one helluva crazy studio too if I remember correctly.  Don't forget They Might Be Giants' "The Sun Is A Mass Of Incandescent Gas" for more educational tunes about space! Heh!

Was this vinyl or what?  I have the album and another one - Opera Sauvage.  I just finished ripping the Albedo and the first side of the Opera to my computer.
