Jon, I *think* our resident Affordable Audio publisher has heard those Aperion's...

On a different note; I am currently evaluating the ELT-525M (almost as we speak). This speaker can do a few things amazingly well.  What kind of music do you plan on listening to ?

Oh, I listen to everything.  Definitely NPR... indie rock... jazz... folk... classical... electronica... and whatever my iTunes shuffle digs up.

I am just concerned that I don't have enough space for the 525s and their rear port.  Ideally, I'd like to slide these right up against my rear wall / desk behind me.  At the same time, it may be possible for me to use a Mapleshade-style tilt stand to aim them at the back of my head.  But I don't want my co-workers to think I'm (too) insane.   



SBR: If I can find a used pair in my price range, the Kayaks look verrry nice.

i will sell mine for quite a lot less, & they're awreddy built, w/upgrades - internal sound dampening, premium wood (the front is honduran rosewood), premium binding posts, auricaps & audience wiring...  and yes, they do sound great!  i yust have way too many speakers presently...

I'm just curious, it looks like there is some gap around the woofer?  PM me if you have a price in mind, I'd definitely put it on my list to consider. 



Another weird possibility (if this might work) would be Magnepan MMG-Ws for my wall in front of the desk.  I'm pretty sure I can get away with that.  I won't be exceeding 65dB, so my tube amp should be just fine driving them

Those Intimus 4B speakers have a bass (more like mid-bass) cut off of 100 - 120 Hz!

yes, the builder cut the cabinets a bit too large, & stuffed the gaps with some sort of pliable material.  it looks ok, & works fine.  check your pm for more info.

Ah, those maggies are specifically wall-mount, so I expect they'd do okay ... but it might be a psychedelic experience working in the nearfield of a pair of planar speakers

i'd like to throw a vote out there for audioengine5 monitors.  sure they're powered...but man do these little guys sound really, really good.  they're extremely cheap too...swap out that tubed int for a tubed pre (or dac if it's coming out the computer) and you'll be in heaven.

i'm listening with a pair right now...i alternate between these and sennheiser 650's...surprisingly i don't feel that disappointment taking off the cans and turning on these little guys that i thought i would.  i have the volume controlled via computer, and they're being driven through a cal alpha d/a straight into the audioengine speakers.  it's really, really surprising how such a reasonably priced solution can sound so good.

or, if you're firm on passive speakers, i'd like to also recommend dynaudio contour 1.1's.  they're small, have clean bass...though i am partial to the dynaudio house sound in general (i love and have owned at some point the special 25, confidence 3, confidence 5).  i saw a pair on agon sold for 800usd (obo) used.
