First thoughts on the 30.2
« on: 28 Apr 2008, 03:06 am »
After going the full upgrade path to my old Sig 30 I have to say that the 30.2 is a different
animal indeed  :icon_twisted:. The bar has been raised so high so as to make comparisons
moot. Anyone considering taking the plunge should do so with all their clothes on. Don't wait.
Right out of the box, with breaking in to come, it is heads and shoulders above the old one.
And the 30 was no slouch in any department. It's just that Vinnie has gone and done it again;
breaking all the rules and messing with perfection just because he had to get better sound
out of the darned thing  :thumb:.
It's funny how a lot of our audio descriptions use analogies that apply to what we see and
feel so this should make sense to most of you out there. Remember the first time you saw
and touched your first relief map? I do. I was a kid and thought that this is how all maps
should be. Not only could you see the shape and contour of the territory, you could feel it as
well. Two dimensional maps couldn't hack it any more. Even the beautifully coloured ones.
They all lacked scale and reference in comparison. Well, Vinnie's new creation is the audio
equivalent of those maps. Notes not only occupy their own space, they define it. In whole.
They have shape, texture, contours, and their own life span as they play out. The focus is
outstanding: everything in sharp relief yet natural. It allows a kind of gestalt in listening
that invites you to just relax and take it in. Notes that use to define boundaries now have space
around them. What used to be the back of the stage is now further. Same goes for the sides and
now the music is further in front of the speakers. Heck, it's even taller now as if the soundstage
has been raised. I don't know how he did it . but I'm not looking back.
What used to pass as bass on my Hornshoppe Horns was like patting a kid on the head. You got
a good idea of what was there since you knew where your hand stopped. Now, the 30.2 has
got that kid in a headlock and he even jerks him around a bit  :icon_twisted:. All that is absent is the
lowest registers and my sub takes over for that. What bass that does come through is tight, deep,
and resonant. That focus I mentioned is here as well: nothing muddied or congealed.
As for the highs, I was thinking of getting those ERT supertweeters from AV123 but the 30.2 relegated
that thought to the trash heap  (rest easy Ed, I only thought about it). Open, airy, extended, just
begin to describe the top end. I can't imagine trying to explain the air and ambience using the relief
map analogy 'cause how does one depict air with a map? But it is here with the 30.2. You sense
it.
If Vinnie goes any further into the recording we should all start getting residuals because we are very
much in the recording venue thanks to his brilliance. Oh, and thanks, Vinnie, for the new speakers. You
should have mentioned that you throw in a new pair with every purchase   8).
And one more thing, stop raising the bar. No 30.5 for a least a few years, okay?

Thanks for posting you thoughts on the 30.2.  Just curious, what other amps have you owned/tried?

That's funny, I like that... Enjoy your 'new system,' nonoise and thanks for the cool review. I'm still waiting for my first taste of .2.

Before the Sig 30 (and now 30.2) I had a Cayin TA-30 modded by Paul @ busybee.
It was a good unit but those EL-34s put out a lotta heat.
Before that it was a Rotel RB-981, a SuperPhon SA-120, then a NAD receiver, then a BGW 500-D, and my
first one was a Naim amp, but I forget the model number.
None can hold a candle to the RWA Sig 30.2, or the 30 for that matter.

Hi nonoise,

Wow, what a great post!  :thumb:

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain
the differences you hear with the 30.2 vs. your original 30.

Yes, new speakers are part of the upgrade!  They look just like the ones you own, but sound better :green:

To be very clear.... there are no upgrades to the Sig 30.2 or 70.2 planned (no 30.3 or anything like that).  They are already performing to the max!  If you want to raise the bar of the 30.2 or 70.2 and bring your listening experience to the highest level, the Isabella will do it like no other  aa aa aa

Thanks again for your post and I'm very happy to hear you are
enjoying your 30.2!

My first thought is wonderful sounding music.

I am only 3 hours into the new Signature 30.2 amp. It matches up very well with the modwright 9.0se preamp and devore super 8 speakers via mac + wavelength brick. I know the amp sound will change after the break-in, but all indications are toward great sound. Already, the speakers disappear more-which I love. And dynamics abound.

I will be away so I will have to wait until next week to hear more. But what a great way to start the weekend.

Thanks Vinnie!

enjoy your musica,

Agree totally.  I received it yesterday, and after only a few hours, really, really a wonderful amplifier.

Thanks guys.
It's really hard trying to write this as I keep jumping back to my sweet spot but I think I now
know what people mean when they say their room is 'energized' by the music. I've been lulled,
carried away, entranced, but never moved as I've been for the past few days. I probably have
close to 50 hours on the 30.2 (I know, I'm taking my time) and its opening up in ways that
literally floor me. Right now, I'm listening to Anouar Brahem's 'Le Voyage De Sahar' CD, again,
and I can't take my ears off of it. It's like it's right in my room, just in front of the speakers, in
such a manner that I've not experienced before. The same goes for Emily Loizeau's
'L'Autre Bout Du Monde': a simple and sweet CD. The lowest registers of the piano, and even her
sweet voice vibrate ever so softly in my fingertips. This have never happened before. It's not
goosebumps but the sound coming from those 3.5" drivers in my Hornshoppe Horns.
I've now, and forever more, shut down my sub as I no longer need it: the 30.2 has such great
control and finesse in the bass that my sub would do it an injustice since it couldn't even begin
to keep up with it musically.
Oud, guitar, piano, accordian, any kind of percussion registers in a way that is now, new to me.
And I love it. There is some wood percussion on Carrie Rodriguez's 'Seven Angles on a Bicycle'
that congers up an immediate mental image of what it looks like that at first, startled me. It sounded
like it was right in the room and not on the recording. Bill Frisell's guitar work, on that CD, loves the 30.2 as much as I do.
Any guitar work for that matter.
Ah, but I repeat myself.
Its just that there is only so much I can relate, by example, without going on ad naseum.
I'm becoming a shut-in.
Wish me luck.

Nonoise - what a great post, and right on, in my opinion.

I have also found it difficult to do anything but sit in the sweet spot, particularly with well-recorded acoustic music, since hooking the 30/30.2 into my system.
The resolution and detail is nothing short of mind boggling to me, and the bass - oh, that tight, fast, deep bass............

One characteristic that I keep coming back to is the tonality and texture that this amp has such brilliant control over, but in such a natural-sounding way.

My room is not properly treated, but the stellar qualities of this amp really shine regardless.

Thanks, Vinnie!

Hi Ed,

Thank you!  DeVore Super 8s are awesome with the 30.2!  I am still in love with the Nines (it is getting close to 1 year).  They simply gel with my room and my tastes in music and sound.  I can't see myself parting with them.

Hi Wilsynet,

Thank you, and welcome to the party!  :thumb:

Hi nonoise and Canyoneagle,

Thanks for your continued posts and valuable feedback... I really appreciate it and I am very honored to read your posts and
find how much listening pleasure your 30.2s are bringing you guys  :)

Enjoy!
