Greetings all

I'm trying to pick the best way to hook up the ZR1600 with the above preamp. I have 2 choices in mind. Also I want to use an unbalanced coax cable (Belden teflon) between the preamp and the ZR1600.
Note- in following discussion pin 2 is plus, pin 3 is minus and pin 1 is ground for the balanced ins and outs.

It might help to sketch out these scenarios to visualize.

Scenario A

1. Unbalanced source to NHT Balanced Preamp --

Source hot lead to pin 2
Source ground to pin 1

2. NHT Preamp output to ZR1600 --

Preamp output pin 2 (coax center lead) to pin 2 of ZR1600.
Preamp output pin 1 (coax shield) to pin 3 of ZR1600.

Pins not used = Input pin 3 of preamp, output pin 3 of preamp, input pin 1 (ground) of ZR1600. ZR1600 ground lift switch set to lifted.

Scenario B

1. Unbalanced source to NHT Balanced Preamp --

Source hot lead to pin 2
Source ground lead to pin 3

2. NHT Preamp output to ZR1600 --

Preamp output pin 2 (coax center lead) to ZR1600 pin 2
Preamp output pin 3 (coax shield) to ZR1600 pin 3

Pins not used = preamp ground pin 1, ZR1600 ground pin 1. ZR1600 ground lift switch set to lifted.

Note that both of the above scenarios drive the full balanced input of the ZR1600. I have seen some schematics where they short pins 1 to 3 on a balanced input and connect those to the source ground. I don't know which is the better method.

Let me know of the above two methods which should theoretically work the best.  I know I really should go balanced all the way but my source is unbalanced and I want to use the passive preamp, not an active one.

if you check out the manual, you will see that carver recommends to put the hot lead to pin 2, negative lead to pin 3 and jumper pins 1 and 3...

i have also pushed in the ground lift switches (on - ground disconnected)

that is the way i soldered my RCA to XLR cable and it works great!!!

(i have the ZR1000)

Hi RussKon
Yeah I saw that in the manual but don't you lose half the gain of the ZR1600 when you short the minus input (pin 3) to ground?

no you do not lose any gain....

the gain level is set by your input level..... you simply adjust your jumpers if your input gain stage does not match up with the standard factory setting.....(page 8 of the manual)....

you are right that on some amplifiers the gain does change radically.....

i have not tried the connection without pins 3 and 1 jumpered..... there may or may not be a difference...
