Help with Contour Network R/C filter...???
« on: 23 Apr 2008, 08:53 pm »
Hi Guys,
I replaced the tweeters in my Brand "x" speakers with a Morel MT32s unit, one of the originals was not sounding too good and after contacting the usual suspects I was advised to replace the tweeter with a Vifa D27tg-05...I was told it was a drop in replacement , had same specs as originals used by Brand "X"...This came from ex-president of said company, since company is now out of business...I ordered the Vifa drivers, but found that I would have to modify the driver heavily or the cabinet in order to get them to "fit"...I opted not to destroy the drivers or the cabinets in case I found an original pair later on...So I did some homework and found that the Morel MT32s was a drop in fit physically...I needed a tweeter with a 110mm flange...I did notice that the FS on the Morel was 650 as compared to the FS on the Vifa being 1000 Hz...The Morel does "sound" VERY nice and I am pleased, but it seems to be lacking just a bit of top end "sizzle" or "sparkle" with the cymbals...I could live with it, but you know how it is...
My question is this, on the tweeter xover there is a contour network (R/C) in series with the + side...The R/C is a 2.5mfd cap and a 5 ohm resistor in parallel...This is on the end of the "line"...The entire xover coming off the + terminal is a 1.5 ohm resistor, 5.0 mfd cap, then a coil going across to the neg side and also a 5ohm resistor (we have the 5 mfd cap, one leg of the coil and the 5 ohm resistor),then the R/C network and that goes to the + side of the tweeter...The neg comes off the post and goes to the other side of the unknown coil and then the neg of the tweeter...Hope this makes sense...Since the tweeter xover is separate from the woofers, I can adjust anything with ease...Just wanted to know if I can do anything to improve the upper range of the tweeter...All musical information is there and is clear, just hoping for a bit more sparkle...
Since I was told that the Vifa was an exact replacement, I am assuming that the original tweeter would have the same specs...Maybe someone could help me out???

it is painstakingly work but you can do it. I did it once as well with a X-over question to a forum as well.

In order for others to more easily answer yr question:

Can you draw the schematic of the filter next to yr verbal description?
be sure to triple check yr drawing with the filter as you can see it
