Any Opinions Re DeVore Silverbacks
« on: 20 Apr 2008, 06:45 am »
I am on a quest for new speakers. So far, I have heard Zu Druids and Definition Mk 1.5, Tannoy Glenaire 10, Wilson Audio Sophia II, Omega Super 3 Alnico (discontinued), and the DeVore Silverbacks. To date, the Definitions and Silverbacks left me with lasting impressions. Of the two, the Silverbacks seemed to be the most enjoyable to listen to. The Zu were much more noticeable while listening but I don't think I could listen for hours on end. They seem to be distracting in that they make both a visual and audible statement. I found myself looking at the speakers and listening to the music. The Silverbacks did not seem to draw attention to themselves and I found myself focusing on the music...which is the objective. It's like owning a car; I would rather drive something fun to drive than something that is fun to look at but not as much fun to drive. So I'd like to hear your experience with the Silverbacks or any other speaker you found more enjoyable over the Silverbacks. Thanks.

I've owned a pair of DeVore Super 8s for two years and have not even thought about auditioning anything else. The Silverbacks are basically "more of a great thing", and if I had a larger room that's what I'd be after. It all depends on what you want your speakers to achieve in your system. If you're interested in the utmost transparency and "truth" in terms of the recording, I don't think you'll find a better speaker in its class. They are extremely balanced, honest, revealing and, as you pointed out, non-fatiguing.

My local DeVore dealer owns one of the most popular concert venues here in Atlanta. He runs a high end audio dealership out of his home, and his rig is worth in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. After  hearing the DeVores at one of the audio shows (it was either RMAF or CES), he not only became a dealer, but he relegated his 30k+ Avalons to the closet in favor of the Silverbacks. Last I knew, he's remained quite smitten with them for a while now and has had no plans to change them out.

I've had a few conversations with John DeVore, and he's a great guy to deal with. He's a true music lover and his products reflect that. They may not be for everyone, but everyone I know who owns them loves them  :thumb:

I heard Steven's system too and was very, very impressed.
