If the Adcom is that fussy, I'd have it checked out to make sure its working right and then be sure to take it with you to audition speakers (or just sell it).

Many highly efficient speakers give up deep bass (shouldn't be a problem for blues/rock) and are very "colored" (something horns are noted for).  Rock monitors in particular harsh, to add to the gritty/edgy "rock sound", which is probably why you were redirected away from PA speakers. 

Is it just the lack of bass that you don't like about the B&W's?  If so, think about adding one or two powered subwoofers.  Hsu and SVS are high value brands.  Subs are cool as they'll help make the little B&W's sound less congested as they take off some of the midbass load of them and the amp.  They can either be placed were sonically ideal, or used as speaker stands for the B&Ws.  ACI is a company here at AC that goes the small speaker/sub route, and they're located near Minnesota.

I am not sure my Adcom GFA 545 II amp and GTP 400 preamp/tuner are fussy.  I think they are a great, full-sounding setup.  I have owned it for at least 15 years and have never had a problem with it.  My B&W 602s actually sound better through the Adcom than they do through my Pioneer Elite HT receiver.  They sound less harsh and more full when they are hooked up to the Adcom.

I have been talking to a couple dealers and one has suggested the Emerald Physics speaker as a first choice and a Gallo Reference 3.1 for a second choice.  I checked out the Gallo web site.  Man, those are some butt-ugly speakers!  At least the Emerald Physics look a little more traditional.

Another dealer is suggesting a line array setup.  Those things are big and heavy!  I would have to put casters on them so they could be moved around!

Yup, I still have a lot of research/learning to do.

My B&Ws have more bass in them than the Klipsch did but they tend to be a bit 'harsh' on the high end.  That is what I dislike about them.

In the near future, I will be posting a review on Dali's Mentor 5 with Affordable Audio (www.affordableaudio.org). 

I will say this, given your tastes, the speakers may be a fantastic match. They have a very immediate, open and dynamic presentation to them. Very linear, with plenty of other hi-fi goodies as well. I'll save the details for the review; but I will say that they are well worth checking out if you get the chance - especially given your situation.

I second 2gumby2's recommendation of PiSpeakers, and Russell Dawkins' recommendation of the big Altecs. 

If something vintage is a possibility, then let me also toss out the Altec Model 14 and Model 19, along with the JBL model 4430 studio monitor.

Naim DBL (active..)... That ought to rock very nice. Expensive!! Needs tri-amp.
It's a very expensive system though!
And should be paired with Naim amps.. it will be hideously expensive to max one of these sets out!!!
The naim is awesome!!! I'm sure it's not really known so much, but it almost defies logic in powerfull delivery.

I've had the Gallos for eight months. My wife also thought them ugly. The longer she listens to them the prettier they get.

Legacy Audio Focus 2020, or even better the newest Focus HD. But don't go hear it unless you are ready to decide, your search for the best rock speaker will be over. Great on everything else too. But the bass is supreme, huge, fat, dancy, shake the house to the ground down to 16Hz. Efficient, natural mids and highs, easy to listen for many hours. Likes current for big rock bass, but fine with smaller amps too. Preowned 2020's from $3.5k, new HD from $6k. I have 10k+ cubic feet and it fills it up easily. I sometimes listen to rock and big classical from 30 feet away while cooking with the amps floored. Awesome. HD has better resolution, still very musical.

horns are awesome.  i have a pair of gemme audio tanto's yust sitting in the box, they have been there for a month, & it took two months for me to get around to driving 90 minutes to get them after i paid for them - all because i yust can't bring myself to disconnect these horns i have been listening to lately - oris horns w/fostex fe206e drivers on top, crossed over at ~250hz to 15" fostex drivers loaded in mondo-reinforced klipsch lascala bass bins.  those are crossed over to vmps larger subs at ~80hz.  (the subs have been a constant in my system for about 15 years.)  this system didn't cost an arm & a leg either - i traded a pair of coincident victory's (outstanding in their own right, imo), & received the oris/lascala's, some cash, & a hypex ucd180 amp that i need to get around to adwertising f/s cuz i have no use for it...  efficiency is ~100db/1w; i am using a 5wpc modded almarro a205amkll on the fostex/oris', & a ~8wpc wintage modded electrohome 6aq5 amp on the 15" fostex/lascala bass bins.  these are good on sissy-girlie music, bombastic rock & everything else in between.  imo, of course!   




(the pioneer/tad supertweeters are not connected - no need for them w/these speakers.)
