This seems to only be a cosmetic issue currently but wonder about the cause and possible prevention from discoloration of a speaker driver rubber surrounds?

I just picked up a used Devore center speaker (1.5 years old but new to me) and the rubber surrounds have milky splotches in some areas.

Just wondering about if treatment such as 303 Aerospace Protectant would be beneficial?

Not really worried about it since I always use the grill on center speaker. But I do like to keep the grills off of my main music speakers and having the Super 8s rubber surrounds get all milky would suck since they look very nice when new.

thanks, ed

No input on this ^^^ ?

I searched and didn't see any references to rubber. Thought some guru here would have insight.

I had the same problem with SEAS drivers. I use a product for my tires  that is a spray on with no need to wipe on/off. The product is made by STONER called, More Shine Less Time for tires.
I sprayed it into a Dixie cup and applied it to the rubber surround with a Q tip. That was 3years ago.
You can go to www.moreshine.com for more information.
The product is tested for UV damage and ozone damage.

303 Aerospace is great stuff. You could use Back To Black first, let it sit for a day, then use 303. Another great product is at your BWM dealer. They sell stuff to treat door gaskets, works great.

Sorry ed, I didn't see this thread until now. I used to sell natural rubber products that were used in extreme conditions, sun, 4x stretch. The white is the latex protein being oxidized. All natural rubber does this when exposed to air. UV light accelerates it. Freezing it stops it "cold" haha.. Synthetic rubbers like butyl etc don't do it, but they don't have anywhere even close to the elongation characteristic of 100% pure natural rubber which can stretch 7+ times its relaxed length before breaking. So, it is very flexible, perfect for driver surrounds like foam and leather too.

To protect my products I repackaged 303 and included it. It makes a barrier that keeps oxygen off for a time, but flexing the rubber and continual exposure to air will wear out. So reapply every 6 months or a year. Try to keep it out of direct sunlight from nearby window. There are window films that will block most UV, 3M makes the best one, but you need to get a pro to install it.

Maybe contact Devore for advice first just to make sure it is really pure rubber and see what they say to put on there. I bet they will have a reasonable answer. If not, then go for the 303. ;) It can't hurt anything. I wouldn't use anything else on it though. Armor-All and similar decorative treatments with silicone will accelerate the aging.

Hello Ed, thanks for pointing me to this thread. I hope you're enjoying your Super 8/7.1 set-up.

All our drivers use natural rubber surrounds, including the Super 8s, so are somewhat susceptible to this discoloration. I don't know about 303, but Rich is right, you want to avoid silicone-based coatings. An expert I consulted uses Armour-All Low-Shine protectant on natural surrounds, and claims it does not contain any silicones. We don't use anything here, but this is from someone I trust.

The 303 is really good stuff...my fave product of that type (and one that garnered top rating from Consumers Reports a few years ago) is NuVinyl by Reed-Union.

Lotsa' places to buy it in the US: http://nufinish.com/buy.html
