help finding Candela manual....?
« on: 17 Apr 2008, 11:43 am »
Hey everyone. I just purchased a used Candela off of A-gon but it doesn't have the manual. I tried searching for it online with no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Can't wait too hear this bad boy (especially after I get my new speakers)

Good luck.  I purchased new from Klaus and didn't get one.  So if anyone has one, perhaps they could post a .pdf?

I don't think the Candela has a manual.  Back when I owned the Candela (ordered new) I didn't get one.  I did get a manual with the amps which talked of various subjects, but no mention of the Candela.

Not really to much you need to know.  The only thing I can think of worth mentioning.... The Candela reverses the phase, so you should reverse the speaker wire at the speakers (+ to - and - to + instead of the normal + to + and - to -)

I think I got the Tempest manual with maybe an extra page or so specific to Candela (specs).

odd about the phase. I'm going to use the the HT Passthrough. So would I have to change my speaker wire every time I use the Candela? or the pre/pro?

No, you don't need to swap the speaker wire, just leave it hooked up with the wires swapped.

Phase can bring upon a debate within itself, and I have not tried it both ways to determine if I could hear a difference, so I can't say either way.  I simply left them swapped.

Alex (who designed the Candela) mentioned awhile back that the speaker wires should be reversed, and some owners believe the soundstage on more recordings appeared accurate than not reversing the SW.   However, not all music is recorded in phase to begin with, and it's possible you wouldn't hear a difference either way.  I dont believe HT listening out of phase is really a noticable issue at all, at least I didn't notice.

So, even though reversing the SW is recommended, YMMV.

Not to hijack a thread or anything but I've noticed many preamps that invert phase.  What is the reasoning behind this process?  What benefits can come of this?  Thanks in advance.

when I first got my Candela I hooked it up un-inverted (?), and Alex advised me that I had it wrong (but I was happy). I swapped the cables around (did it wrong of course), and saw little if any difference. Then he got me to do it the right way. What I heard was more space between the instruments in a quartet, and maybe a tiny bit more detail. There was more width in the sound stage, but as I said much more space between the instruments. Lastly; have Klaus build you a pair of Gronenberg IC's like mine with the WBT ends (as short as you can get by with). I found that swapping the generic power cord for a better one really smoothed things out (I'm using a Stealth right now).

As a newbie I have a newbie question. I was reading one of the Candela threads from around '06 and the Candela release. It mentioned a phone stage that would be released for use with the Candela. Has this been released yet? If no is what phone stages are people using that are a good combo with the Candela?

Thanks.

Mike, did you get the Candela yet?
is it hooked up?
how does it sound?
In regards to phono, I used to have the Tempest, and it's stock phono was pretty nice, especially at no extra costs!!! :thumb:
Currently I use a DIVA Audio Virtuoso with a step on my Scout/Shelter 501Mkii combo and it's wonderful...to my ears and in my system, the Diva is much quieter than all the stages I've had, even with the step up...  It's a tube stage using 2 12AX7, which seems to be the standard...
Anyways...I think first we need to talk about budget... what's your budget for the phono stage???
I've heard good things about budget ones like the Sim Audio, Musical Phonemenon and some others...
What table and cartridge are you using?
T
PS, your cable will ship tomorrow! thanks! :green:

Hey Tuan. Great news about the cable. To be honest I'm just getting in to vinyl a little and am looking to buy everything, and am just kind of seeing whats out there. Waiting for the IC's before I get the Candela up and running, can't wait.

Got the Candela up and running. The one thing that bugs me is why I've listened to music the last 20 years without getting a higher quality setup. This is my first 2 channel pre. I've just used Recievers or pre/pros in the past. I really can't believe the detail, soundstage, 3D image, and depth I've been missing. (Not to mention the bad recordings). Amazing piece of gear. Love it.

To get your juices flowing to an even higher level start experimenting with some different tubes.  Many of the guys here prefer the RCA ClearTops while I have settled on a pair of Amperex Bugle Boys.

Enjoy!

wait till it gets to the sixty hour mark!! Lower mids and upper bass really makes a jump. A better power cord is helpfull in imaging and maybe some with the highs.

I actually bought this used so I'm assuming it may have 60 hours on it. Also I'm using a Signal Cable power cord instead of the stock. Not the most expensive but it does a good job.

I believe that trying out new tubes will be my next endeavor. I bought the Candela in anticipation for my new speakers but it makes my current speakers sound soooo much better. Can't wait till the LS-9s arrive.

Thanks for the info guys.

Also curious what different characteristics to expect between the clear tops and the bugle boys?

Hey, that's the setup I'll have! Candela/Dual Mono/LS9's. What amp do you have?

Okay now I'm a litle confused. Been doing some reading on the Candela about how the phase is inversed (that right?) so you should switch the speaker cable at the speakers so positive is connected to negative and vice versa. Then I was reading something else that said this isn't the case for HT/SACD/DVD-A?

I'm currently using a Toshiba SD-9200 for both redbook and SACD (I know another future upgrade) going from the 2 channel ouput of the Tosh into the CD Input of the Candela.

I really don't want to have to change the speaker cables everytime I watch a movie or listen to music as I'm using spades and it's a pain. Can someone further explain this situation to help a newbie understand?

Thanks!

Mike
