What are your FAVORITE live recordings?
« on: 14 Apr 2008, 02:17 pm »
I am finding that I really enjoy listening to live recordings on my rig... esp. those that seem to convey the spirit and soundstage of the concert.

I was curious what some of your faves are -- be it for the beauty and brilliance of the performance itself, the quality of the recording or its ability to put you "there."

Throw out some noteworthy recordings and take a moment to share why its tops in your collection. I'll get it started...

Ben Harper -- "Live From Mars" -- Disc 1 is with the Innocent Criminals - and it's big, bold and rockin'; Disc 2 is solo acoustic stuff that's just gorgeous and heartfelt. Great stuff.

Here are some of them of the top of my head.

1. Marcia Ball Live Down The Road (New Orleans Music at it's best)
2. BB King Live AT The Regal (Perhaps the best Blues album ever recorded)
3. Corn Sisters (Neko Case and Kelly Hogan) The soundstage can be spooky real.
4. Junior Wells Live At Theresa's (Best live recording of Chicago Blues)

Those are great suggestions. Lots of stuff I've never heard of. Keep 'em coming. I am on the prowl for this stuff lately.

I love live recordings myself.  These CD's are probably not audiophile quality to many but to me they bring a ton of life to the music.  They can be had for cheap on amazon.  i would love to hear people's thoughts.

1. Erykah Badu - Live
2. Uptown MTV Unplugged
3. Shai - Right Back at Cha
4. G3 - Live (Satriani, Johnson, Vai)

+ on Lou Reed - Rock 'n' Roll Animal and whoever reccomended the live at junior wells live thersea's. Anyway here's a few:

1) Van Morrison-too late to stop now-IMO the finest live set (a bunch of 73 shows combined) ever
2)Govt Mule-with a little help...just fun and more diverse then you would think
3)Thin Lizzy-live n dangerous-way ahead of its time
4)Any of the allman brothers vault recordings
4) Little Feat-waiting for columbus
5) Sonny rollins-live at the village vanguard-glorious mono

this leans a bit on the classic rock but im having a brain freeze right now and im sure there are some vocal and jazz records im forgetting
