I know this is probably a silly question, but does it matter which direction the LED goes in?  All three legs are different lengths, but there is nothing in the manual about orientation of the LED, so I just wanted to make sure I didn't put it in backwards!  I do realize it goes on the top side of the board.

Yes, it matters.  LED's usually have a flat side on them and PCB's generally mark the flat side in the outline on the board.  I don't know what kit you're using, but if it's a three leg LED, it must be two color.  I don't recall the standard layout of two-color LED leads, but reversing it will either kill the LED or reverse the colors.

I completely forgot to mention the kit I was using!  It is a Cornet2.  That is what I thought, so I am glad I asked the question.  Now, I just need to figure out which way to put it in!

Actually, the manual says:

Install LED onto backside of circuit board. Keep leads as long as possible (about one inch). Tab on side labeled “LED*”.

It looks like it goes on the same side as the tube sockets and the "tab" is on the side where the LED text is printed on the board.

By tab, what do you mean?  I cannot find a traditional tab on the LED.  One of the outer legs is bent at a 45 degree angle, while the other is bent at a 90 degree angle.  Would the 90 degree angle be the tabbed side?

The bottom lip of the bulb will have a notch or is flat on the tabbed side. Use a magnifier like I do for everything as my eyes are slowly fading

Look at the lip at the bottom of the bulb on the left side to see notch.

Cool.   I see that!  So, the tab would go where the * is then, correct?
