how big is your itunes collection?

Just curious, doing a bit of research.

How big are your iTunes collections in terms of CD's?
I noticed that as I went up past about 500 CD's iTunes got
a lot slower to use and above 1000 CD's it really got pokey.

Your thoughts are appreciated...

Hi Jeff,

What gets sluggish in iTunes, the interface window? Play/Pause/Skip controls?

I use the iTune List view primarily and have 544 Albums (AIFF) @285 GB total, on an older G5 and it isn't sluggish when browsing (even with coverflow View). There probably is a limit though. I hope to find it someday!

I have around 500 Apple Lossless CDs in my primary library which sits on a Time Capsule and about 100-150 in my secondary library which is local on my Macbook.  I didn't notice differences in response time as I increased the number of CDs and I sure hope I don't in the future.

Interesting topic, I hope you find something to fix it.

What kind of Mac do you have, and how much memory does it have?

I have just about 500 CDs on my G5 iMac (1GB RAM) as well as a few GBs of podcast videos, and everything seems to run fine....

Hmmm. I have about 15000 tracks from just over 1100 CDs all ripped to ALAC with no issues running off an iMac core duo with 2 gig of ram. It even runs fine when the library is accessed as a share from another machine via wifi.

Do you use a lot of album art using excessively large graphic files?

BTW, I've heard of libraries approaching 100,000 tracks with no issues.

My collection is about the same size as Crimson's. All ALC files on an external hard-drive using an older Powerbook G4 laptop. I have noticed differences in HD access speeds, but not related to the overall size of the collection. Perhaps other issues are at play?

Update:

Did some googling and found the following info:

1. If you're running it on a Mac with v7.0 and above, disable 'Automatically download missing album artwork' in Preferences -> General.

2. If you're running v7.0 on a Vista machine, you're SOL.

3. If your library is approaching 200,00 tracks on a G5, you're SOL. You need to upgrade : http://www.ugnn.com/2007/04/itunes_painfully_slo.html  :green:

34000 songs, 162gigs.

Most of these are lossless or mp3. I haven't really ripped much of my cd collection yet. Need a bigger drive.
