Ported or Not Ported???
« on: 8 Apr 2008, 09:41 pm »
We are high schoolers building a simple two-way set of speakers and were wondering what are some of the pros and cons of having ported speakers??? Also, how much more complicated is it to build a ported speaker rather than a non-ported speaker?

This post might better fit under the Jr. Audiophile circle, but regardless, each has its own advantage. Usually sealed boxes are smaller, if space is an issue.  Ported usually has more extended bass, but some like the sound of a sealed box (thinking that it may respond faster). For the most part, which works best may be dictated by the TS parameters of your woofers.  If you could give us a bit more info about your goals and woofers under consideration, we could better guide you.  :D

As far as complexity, it's not that much more effort to cut an extra hole and put a tube in it.

Multiple threads like the duplicate you have at GR Research are frowned apon. I'd recommend you delete one and take the advise of SClark. Welcome to Audiocircle.  :thumb:

bass is more true to form with a non ported speaker, but also takes much more power to drive them. Ported speaker cabnets are usually much smaller because the don't need the large volume of displacement behind the drivers (they pull air in from the outside). A non ported cabnet must be much larger to attain the same levelof bass when compaired to a ported speaker. This is why the vast majority of speakers are now built in a ported form. They do sound different!
