Hello,

Compared to the Super 3, is the Super 5 with deeper bass, closer in sound to the XRS or is it different in other ways?    I've been searching, but I haven't read any new Super 5 owner comments.

I have just taken delivery of a pair of Super 5s in Burled Ash with tan grills, and ports on the outside wall. It will take a while to break them in if Louis' estimate of 200 hours is on the mark. I will report back in a while when I have a better sense of the sound, so be very patient. The build quality, appearance, and finish is superb!

I expect to have them broken in and will bring them to VSAC in Vancouver WA this May:  http://www.vsac2008.com/index.html

still no user info on the 5's?  They are on my list but waiting to hear some of the feedback.  How are they sounding?

I wish that I could report on my Super 5s, but I have them playing in my pottery studio from an old Advent 300 receiver, so they are breaking in and not likely to be placed in my system for another two weeks or so. I love the new sound in my studio, but cannot listen critically yet.

Cheers, Hank

Hi All,

Thanks and the S5s have a bit more bass tan the Super 3s. It's mostly like the XRSs, but the XRSs have a bit more weight.

The big change is the imaging and the S5s are the best.

Thanks,
Louis

Hi I think I'm about to pull the trigger on the Super5, but one quick question.  The poster above, Hank Murrow, mentions his with port to outside.  Does that mean to the side, as opposed to back?  What is the advantage?  Could you also put the port on front?  Any degradation in overall sound?  btw, I will be running it off an Almarro A205mkII 5w amp.

I requested that Louis place the ports on the side panels so that the Super 5s could be used against a wall. He can put them anywhere you desire. Great guy to work with in making things fit your needs!

HM, thanks for prompt input.  Any difference between side versus front?  I think I would like to place closer to wall.  Or pretty much side or front port achieves the same thing.

With side ports you may gain a little more bass when placed against he wall, I like the portless front panel because the speaks are so pretty. Side port gives you more potions re: placement. Rear would be optimum if you never had to put them near a wall.

They image better when out from the wall around 15" or more. Best to be 3_4 feet away from side walls. I have my ports firing to the outside, left and right. Low frequencies coming from the port don't create wall bounce at those wavelengths.

have I answered your queries?

Cheers, Hank

Are the super 5's available with Alnico, too? I was under the impression there would be 6" and 8" alnicos.

Louis suggested that the 4.5" Alnicos will be quite awhile coming on-line, so I went ahead and ordered the Super 5s plain.
