Two sweet spots

No this is not in reference to  John Casler's two sweet spots(he knows what I mean).

Is it possible to have two sweet spots,in two sitting positions, in the same room?????

I.E. In my situation with my theater setup, having the speakers in the first row aiming at either ear(left speaker to left ear) but having them cross in front of the listener in the second row. Yes, each row would have a different flavor sweet spot and I could bounce between them to see what I prefer.   With my distances from the front speakers this could work.

Any suggestions???

Larry,

Multiple sweetspots with regards to depth are definitely possible.  If you put a second row a few feet behind the first row, both centre positions in the rows will experience a full sound.  However, the presentation of the music will differ, and the soundstage will be varied depending on if you've optimized the setup for the first row, second row, or somewhere in between to compromise.  However, with any loudspeaker, sitting left or right of the ideal centre position will always result in less than optimal soundstage.

This is something to take into account when tuning the speakers and experimenting with in-room tweaking - results will vary room by room.

Of course, for movies you have far more leeway versus music.

Kind Regards,

Rup

Thanks Roop,

I am emphasizing the music part of this not the movie part. Dialog would not really change drastically with the two examples. Some might like one vs the other but with good speakers(like VMPS) etc. The movie experience
is not the problem.

I should state that I have a stage and platform(two risers) so the stage and second row(first platform) are on the same plane.

I am looking for a great music experience 1st and movie 2nd.

I am just looking for some ideas.

I have not heard of the theory of two sweet spots before.

Hey Larry, I had a whole thread on this some time ago.

Sweet spots can be enjoyed at various mid points "exactly" between the speakers that offer a balanced sonic convergence between them.

The only thing that will vary is the perceived width of the soundstage, and the frequency response of the presentation depending on the "On" or "Off" axis response.

Moving more forward will certainly move the speakers wider apart in relation to your ears and present a wider presentation perception.

I sometimes marvel at just how close you can move between the speakers (at least mine) and still get a precision and detailed center image and full stage!!

Generally, directly "on axis", will produce the best pinpoint imaging and detail, while moving further "off axis" forwards or backwards, will soften the presentation.

I like them all, but my favorite is certainly the precisely converged "on axis" position when seriously listening.

While VMPS speakers of course are tuneable, some might not like exactly "on axis" with other more conventional speakers since it sometimes can be more harsh and aggressive, with no way to tame it except to listen with them a little "off"

So in essense, we could generally say that with most good speaker systems that there is actually a "sweet line" that runs midline between the speakers where you could mover forward or backwards along that line and still be in a pretty good sweet spot.

Thanks John,

I guess great minds......

I have always setup my speakers in the past with aiming at the ears not crossing  infront since this sounded the most detailed to me. But it just makes sense to me that there would be more then one sweet spot along the depth plane. My sitting positions are similar to yours also.

So putting that 52 y/o in front of you when listening??(per your previous post).
