Question: which iMod do I have?
« on: 5 Apr 2008, 07:02 am »
Hi Vince. I bought an iModded iPod from you about a year ago. I believe it's called a 4thGen but I don't remember exactly? The reason I ask is because I'm looking for the latest version of Rockbox to put on it, and on the selection page, there is an "iPod 4thGen Grayscale" and an "iPod Video 60/80GB". Which one of these versions did I buy from you and which firmware should I download?

He's at the show.

If you plug your amp in through the line out dock on the bottom of the unit, you have an imod video 60/80GB which is 5/5.5 generation

If you use what used to be the headphone output, then you have a generation 4.I think this is what you have, you can't see colors on your imod right? So you would want the 4G version.

Well it appears I have what is called an iPod Color. It's a 60GB. The screen...at least after the Rockbox installation, is color, not greyscale. But the wierd thing is, if the gen I own is a 4th Gen, why isn't there an "iPod 4th Gen Color" option instead of just "iPod Color/Photo"(the one I actually installed)? They should be more specific.

Dunno man, sorry. Do you connect to the amp via the headphone out? So you can't just plug headphones straight into your imod and listen? You can use headphones straight out of a 5G but not a 4G.

I plug in the amp through the top where the headphone jack used to be. Its a 4G, I know that for SURE. The things I was questioning was, why on the Rockbox download page, they have "iPod Color" -or- "4thGen iPod Greyscale". No "4th Gen iPod Color" option, which is what threw me off. I downloaded the '4thGen iPod  Greyscale" one thinking it was the right one to get when it turned out not to be.

Ah I see. So the "ipod color" Rockbox works good?

Hi isamu,

I apologize for the delay... I have been away at the Montreal show.

You have the iPod Photo.  Yes, it is a 4th generation iPod, but it has as color screen (so they sometimes call it iPod Color). They should of called it a 4.5 gen iPod

Best regards,

Vinnie
