BCD-1 CD Player and 2 way RS232?
« on: 3 Apr 2008, 05:21 pm »
Can we control the BCD-1 CD Player via the RS232 port in a similar fashion to the SP17 and SP2?   Reading the literature, I don't think it can be controlled via the rs232 port, but I thought I would ask.

I have a rather integrated home theatre PC control setup and this would be a fantastic option for me.

Thanks!
Scott

Hi Scott,

Right now the RS232 is just for software upgrades but we could write software for Control as well. It is just not something we have had much demand for.

Nice to have the flexibility, James.  I'm currently mulling over a purchase of the BCD-1 and upgrade of my SP17.

I absolutely LOVE the rs232 control over my Bryston SP17 - and I checked into the updates you made to the protocol for the SP2 and was really liking the improvements that I saw over command prefixes and consistency.     It just makes things so much more flexible when you can detect an event happening on the SP17, and have the room lights, video inputs, audio inputs and projector all switch to their proper settings.   Likely people are handling this a different way, or just don't know about it!

I guess if I'm the only one requesting such a thing on the CD Player, it will never make it on your engineer's tasks lists, will it James?

I appreciate the info.  I can also appreciate that I may have more "bargaining power" if I'm an actual BCD-1 customer.

OK!  I can officially start lobbying for this now, as I placed my order for a BCD-1 yesterday with my dealer!   Picked up another 4B-SST as well, so I'm very, very excited about these new additions!

James, how is the turn around time on BCD-1's these days?  Is there still a large back-order?

Hi Scott,

Yes there is still a backorder so I would say a couple of weeks from order.
What dealer did you order through - I will try and fast-track it for you.

So James,

Do you know if engineering would be willing to work with me on getting some information out the rs232 port of the BCD-1?  I'd be a completely willing beta-tester.

Basically I like to trap the information provided by the device and display it on my LCD panel.  So things like Current Track, Current TrackTime, Tracktime Remaining, next track, etc etc would just be so fantastic to display on the LCD that I use as my control centre.

Even better would be a means to change tracks and/or settings on the BCD-1 using rs232 commands issued from my PC's home control software.

The SP17 seems to work very well for me in this manner.

Hi Scott,

I will ask but I know that the engineer in charge of the CD Player is up to his ears in the SP3 so it may be a while.

Understood, James.  Thanks for asking.  Maybe he'll see this as an exciting side project!
