As opposed to what other type of configuration?

A 2-way with 1 tweeter and 1 midrange/midbass, or in a 3-way, instead of WMT.

Are there inherent advantages. For instance a LineSource may do certain things well that a point source doesn't or visa-versa. Cones and domes have wider despersion than ribbons......but ribbons....There's compromise in all designs, I was curious what the pluses of an MTM are. Why use MTM?

One thing it offers is greater sensitivity than a standard 2-way.  Presumably greater SPL potential, too?

Yes, the sensitivity is better, but the impediance may be lower (8 ohm + 8 ohm in parallel = 4 ohm load). More cone = more air pressure also. In larger rooms where you can sit a little farther away and have the space for an MTM to gel, they sound more like a good point source with a wider sweet spot than TM designs.

As implemented per Joe D'Appolito, you have benefits of a pseudo 'point source' propagation of the sound wave. Some below links may help better explain more precisely the benefit including, as mentioned, possible higher sensitivity:

Apologies of linking to other forums is bad form (pun not intended). It simply saves me time from rewriting what is already available online or plagiarizing other's posts.
