signature 30.2 batteries
« on: 29 Mar 2008, 06:46 am »
Could someone speak to the expected duty cycle of the Signature 30.2 batteries?

For example, if I were to use the amplifier 4 hours a day, how long are the batteries expected to last before requiring replacement?  Is conditioning the battery like I do with my laptop batteries (run the batteries down before charging them fully again) expected to extend the life of the batteries?

Also, how much are replacement batteries expected to cost?  Are they expected to be a user serviced component, or do we send the amplifier back to Red Wine for service?

I'm just wondering if abandoning tubes for the battery power is trading one set of problems for another ...

well

if you buy a battery , you own it, no way when its life cycle comes to an end the "shop" will replace you battery
the smart module in the RW amp will considerably lengthen the life of the batteries. When do you replace yr car battery?

With lead acid batteries, you are not supposed to "run them down " before recharging them. Use for your 4 hours then recharge right away. With this duty cycle the two 5 amp hour SLA 's in this amp should last up to 5 years. Replacements are cheap at around $15 each, plus or minus w/ shipping.

Hi Wilsynet,

Welcome to Audiocircle and the RWA forum!

With the SMART module installed in our products, you can't accidentally deeply discharge the batteries, so you should get at least a couple of years of life out of them.  If you are only playing for 4 hours a day and then turn the unit off to charge the batteries, you should get plenty of life out of them... 3 to 5 years is more like it.

No... all you need to remember is that the SLA batteries always like to be in the fully charged state, so as long as you turn off the unit to charge when you are finished playing, you'll be fine.  If you forget to turn off, the SMART module will do this automatically for you when the voltage gets low enough.

Batteries are currently approx. $15 to $20 each (+ shipping) at various online resellers.  Yes, the user can replace them if he/she is comfortable doing so (following the directions in the User's Manual).  Or, send your unit back to us and we'll take care of it.

Hope this helps,

Vinnie

Who can give some feedback about the charge time for the batteries in the RW amp?  Time to go from drained to fully charged (using the new charger, not the older version).

Hi Fork,

It is just a couple hours to go from drained to fully charged.

If you have only been playing for a few hours, charging is very quick!

Best regards,

Here is some feedback based on my own experience and a very interesting email exchange with Chris Dodd. I have both an RWA 30.2 and a Dodd Battery Preamp.
Yes, you are going to have to replace batteries just like you have to replace tubes in tube gear. But batteries are generally cheaper and your system isn't going to get noisy as the batteries go south. The shelf life of these SLA's is several years but that is irrelevant. How long they last in your system could be just a couple of years (long playing hours at high volume every day) or many years (see Vinnie's comments). But in no case will they last longer than their normal shelf life.
Here are my personal suggestions for extending battery life:
First, turn it off when you aren't using it. For example, if you listen for an hour or two then take a break, shut it down - even if it is only for 30 minutes. If you are curious, monitor the charger light. You may be surprised how fast it fully recharges.
Second, shut it down after four hours anyway. Give it at least an hour to recharge (it may fully recharge in that time depending on how loudly you were playing it, etc.) but even if it isn't fully recharged this should extend battery life quite a bit.
Third, never run the batteries all the way down (you can't with the new Red Wine Audio products anyway but you can with other SLA powered gear). Draining the SLA's will have the same bad effect it has on a car battery - it will shorten it's life quite a bit.
Fourth, don't worry, be happy.

5 years and keep them charged up . They are NOT deep cycle types .
