SP 1.7 Digital Crossover Question?
« on: 28 Mar 2008, 03:33 am »
Hi

Just wondering...

1.  What are the slopes are for the SP 1.7 digital high pass and low pass filters are.

2.  Are the slopes different for THX - 80Hz vs. non THX crossover frequencies?

3.  Can one high pass the mains using the "Small" setting but still send a full range signal to tbe sub?

4.  For the same crossover setting is using the SP 1.7's digital crossover sonically better than using an analog active crossover like the Bryston 10B?

Thanks

Alex

Hi

I know I'm responding to my own old post but I find myself wondering the same things now...

I asked the above a while back when I was experimenting with my Velodyne DD-12 sub.  I was thinking I could achieve a simple active bi-amp setup.  I encountered the typical problems of the sub playing at frequencies too high (audible from listening postioning) with the SP 1.7's default 80hz THX xover or not being able to "unload" my Maggie 1.6 mains if I lowered to the processor's xover frequency.

For awhile I just decided not to use a sub at all and just use my 1.6's full range for music.

NOW (almost 3 years later)  I've had to move everything to the basement (man-cave) and thought I would try using the sub again.

For music I am trying SP 1.7 xover at 25hz just to fill the bottom octave with the maggie's running full range.

The question is how to limit higher frequnecy output from the sub when I use a home theater source and need the xover set higher for my less capable surrounds.

Thanks

Alex

For my 2 channel CD input, I set my mains to "Large" with crossover at 35hz.  Then set Xtra Bass = On.   The sub fills in the lower octaves nicely.

HT media comes in through my DVD input.   Here you have several options.   I set my mains to "LARGE" so they can play full range.  Sub crossover at 80hz for the LFE channel.   My surrounds are set to "small" which I believe makes then play only 80hz and higher.

Hi Folks

Sorry just saw this

The crossover in the SP1.7 which only works in digital is 18db on the lowpass and 12db on the high pass. There is no difference with the THX settings.

Flexibility is the name of the game when it comes to integrating a sub. So the 10B wins that contest hands down.

Thanks - I keep forgetting you can adjust/set for each input in the SP1.7 & SP2.
I've had all my inputs (CD/AUX/TAPE) set to my DVD setting for HT at 80Hz - time to do some tweaking!
