I'm a newbie here and this is my first post, though I've been on Audio Asylum for several years. I may need to call Klaus, but I thought I would pose my questions here first.

But before that let me say that this is the second product in the Odyssey line that I've purchased, and I continue to be impressed by those guys. I had occasion to speak to Mike (I think that was his name) once when Klaus was not available - nice guy who, like Klaus, was willing to answer all questions and take as much time as needed with a customer.

And there is something really cool  about having a product built for you (with your name plate on the back!).

Anyway, upon reading the manual there is only one page devoted to the Candela. Is there more information that was inadvertantly left out?

Should it be left on all the time as with the solid state stuff?

What is the expected tube life?

Also, what kind of burn in time should I expect, and at what point do the changes occur? I have about 20-24 hours on it so far.

It replaced a NAD C160 that is surprisingly good. But with the Candela there is a sweetness that the NAD didn't have. So far the biggest difference is that and the way it helps to reproduce complex musical passages - a little less congestion and it's easier to hear each instrument.

Welcome to AC and congratulations on your purchase. 

I received my Odyssey Mono SEs and Candela during June of last year.  I think I recall AlexG (who built my Candela) saying to expect slight changes over the first 50 hours of operation.  No, do not leave the Candela on as is required by the amps.  I don't know how long the tubes last as I have experimented with some NOS Tubes in my Candela.

I've enjoyed it alot so far. When I first connected it I left the speaker wires unchanged - iow correct polarity.

After a couple of hours listening I reversed phase at the speaker end per Mike at Odyssey and what I've read here on audiocircle. Whoa! Big difference!   aa

I have about 20 hours on it so far. Looking forward to the burn in changes

Fred,
I owned a Candela and enjoyed it immensely. A great value in high performing preamps. Try a 1950 RCA cleartop to a super sweet top end.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but reading about how the current craze seems to be tube preamp/SS amp made me wonder about something.  The majority of people will agree that solid state amps need to be left on to sound the best.  Tube electronics however cannot/should not be left on because of the extremely finite life of the tubes. 

Now I also understand that there is a certain order of which components are turned on and off.  I understand that in order to turn off a preamp one must turn off the amp first.  What is everyone doing with their tube preamps and solid state amps when they need to power down their tubes?  Should one turn off the amp, then turn off preamp then turn amp back on and then reverse this process when one goes to turn the preamp back on? 

Many people have said that the Stratos needs a good 24 hours of warm up time to sound its best so this has had me thinking quite a bit.  I know my next purchase will be a preamp of some sort but I'm really confused on how to operate it in conjunction to my Stratos.

Its sth that i wonder as well ... but then i've never really been able to tell the difference between a warmed up khartago and a cold one 
They sound fine when i turn them on and just start playing music.

I've got a tube preamp and a Khartago amp.  The Khartago stays on all the time.  When I turn the preamp on, I make sure I have the volume turned all the way down.  That way, I don't get that loud thump when powering on.

Rule of thumb, .. if you have turn - on thump issues:
When turning on, start from the source eg. CD player, preamp, power amp.
When turning off, start from the speaker eg. power amp, preamp, CD player.

Of course, if your power amplifier itself generates turn on / turn off transient thumps, the above won't help you.
