Mundorf Silver & Oil Caps
« on: 24 Mar 2008, 08:57 pm »

I've heard some good things about the Mundorf Silver/Oil caps. Has anyone used these caps in their preamp? Is this cap okay to use in the preamp? How long is their break-in time?

Thanks,

Gary

I just put in Mundorf silver/oil caps in coupling position in my amp 2 days ago.  They are on play/off/play burn-in cycle, but after a couple of days, they are already sounding pretty darn nice.  I would say the worst of the burn-in goes away after couple of days.

The caps they "replaced" (not saying better or worse) were Mundorf silver/gold, which "replaced" V Cap Teflons, etc, etc.

More complete report to follow after full burn-in and testing.

I have used all of the caps mentioned above and will tell you that the Mundorf Silver/Oil start to sound okay in a few days but it takes about 200-300 hours for them to reach their full potential vs. 400+ hours on anything teflon.
I am currently burning in some Silver/Oil caps in one of my Audio Note Custom DACs and after 100 or so hours, they are just starting to open up.

On the Mundorf site I see at least 3 premium types - M-Cap Supreme, Supreme Silver/Oil, and Supreme Silver/Gold (non-oil?).  PartsConnexion shows yet another level Supreme Silver/Gold in Oil above that ($100+ each in 1uf).

Are there indeed two versions of Silver/Gold, and if so, where is best application of each one, such as Aikido line level coupling (mine is 1uf Auricap now)?

Hi Tom,
The SIlver/Gold/Oil was just released. I do not have any experience with them yet but this is the reason I sold my Bella 100 Custom Mondorf amplifiers. I wanted to get a feel for the Silver/Oil. My nextstep will be to try out the Silver/Gold/Oil in one of my Audio Note Custom preamps.

I really like the SIlver/Oil as well as the Silver/Gold. I am thinking the S/G/O will give me all the detail and transparency of the S/G but with a little of the S/O warmth.

Silver/Oil - very detailed and refined with some added warmth.
Silver/Gold - Very honest and articulate yet smooth
Silver/Gold/Oil -  we'll see :thumb:

I use couple of 1 uF Mundorf Silver/Oil caps for the output caps in a Cornet2 tube phono pre-amp. Never had any other cap in that position so all I know is that they sound very, very good at that location.

As for break-in, instead of spinning 225 albums to get 300 hours on a phono pre-amp, I put together a Hagtech FryKleaner along with the iRIAA Filter. Jim's Frybaby is even nicer. Assembled price is $249, but if you don't mind stuffing parts in a board the bare circuit board is $39. Parts for the FryKleaner cost me $60.

The IsoTek System Enhancer might speed up break-in, though I have never used the CD.

Bill, when you say the Silver/Oil caps are "very detailed" does this mean they are bright sounding? I want a detailed cap that is smooth on the top end. Don't want listener fatigue. I'm going to put these in my deHavilland UltraVerve.

My findings..... Not bright at all. I would think of them as having the traits you would expect from a silvercap but with the smoothness you would get from the oil.

They will be a bit clinical or dry sounding in the beginning. At least they were in my amps for about the first 60 hours or so but they smoothed out nicely.

Has anyone tried these with Sonicap Platinum as bypass? Could be just the ticket.

Use them all the time as by pass caps.
Sonicap Platinums well worth it.

I have never used them. Caps are like spice and what works for you depends on the rest of your system and personal preference. *I* used AN copper PIO's in my Ultraverve and was happy with the sound. The stock pre has an Auricap with a Russian K40 PIO bypass. There is also a resistor that you can change to a Mills that will improve the smoothness of the midrange.
