Passsive radiator adjustment for CDWG when not using CDWG

So, when we buy an RM40 with the CDWG and get the revised/updated passive radiators, but then don't use the CDWG, what should be done (if anything) to the passive radiators?  I'm not using the WGs, but the bass seems to be boomy.  However, I don't know what to do about it -- would taking off putty make the boominess worse or better?

This is the reason I'm selling my RM40s.  Not because they don't sound great -- they do.  But the customer service sucks.  It took me over a YEAR to get waveguides (i.e., I paid over a year earlier), which then warped with no replacement in site.  Moreover, when I received the waveguides, there were no masks for the tweeters, and I had to buy these separately later.

Now, I ask a simple question to try to figure out whether I need more or less putty when trying to adjust the passive radiators to correct the boominess the speakers have without the waveguides, since the passives have supposedly been adjusted specifically for use with the waveguides, and I get no answer.  Adjustment of the passives is supposedly criticial to get the best performance from the speakers.

That's it -- I'm sick of it.  My RM40s and RM30C are up for sale as of today.

Bob,

I think the new passives are lighter.  So I guess you stick more putty if you decide not to use the CDWG.  You may also have to add the horned frame back on the FST it they were dehorned for CDWG.  Have you tried PMs? Both JC and B are good returning PMs even if Big B only uses few words to answer.   8)

Hi Bob,

Sorry to hear of the tribulations.

I just saw your question late yesterday (for some strange reason my circle subscriptions turn off occasionally) and was going to let Brian answer, but he is backed up just finally receiving some acceptable cabinets for the "ambiance tweeters", so I doubt he has seen your question.

The Passive Radiator system should not cause "boominess" unless it is way off.

Generally if the putty is off, it causes "wooliness" or less defined and rich bass.

Did you change the speaker position?  Or listening position?  Speaker wires?

Since the CDWG "reduces" MR/HF output and taking them off "theoretically" would then "increase" output, I would try reducing the pots substantially to create a better balance between the systems.  Then adjust the PR.

Regarding Tweeter Masks, their are none with the CDWG, since they are not used with the CDWG.  The tweeter is dehorned, and the diffraction slot does not use a Mask over the tweeter.

B, has already sent the "tighter fitting" connectors for your wave guides and is at the mercy of the Shipments of new cabinets to send you another pair (although you offered to pay for them, he told me they were "no charge") when they arrive.

Bob seems to have been on the receiving end of a series of oversights on my part, for which I apologize.

Many of the aftermarket CDWG's sent us from China developed a curve or warp for reasons that are not clear.  New shipments sent us had the same problem.  The "hedlock" grillframe fasteners from China did not hold very firmly which made the problem worse.

I can send Bob of new set of vitrified PR's to go with new fasteners which hold much tighter.  There should be no boominess with either CDWG on or off this way.

Usually this forum sees only good things said about our customer service and I hope this will rectify matters.

I did not see Bob's post yesterday before it disappeared.  It's always best to email me directly at vmpsaudio@AOL.com.
