Lookig for suggestions for my room
« on: 16 Mar 2008, 05:25 pm »
I have never done any kind of room treatments in the past so am kind of a newbie in this department. I took a couple pics and made a very pathetic cad drawing :D Hopefully these will help assist in some suggestions to get this room fine tuned. The CAD is in word so hopefully I can get it to work here

Ok well I can't get the CAD drawing to work which is ok since it was not very good anyway. I will just try my best to explain the room.

It is 20'L X 13'W x 7.5'H there is a couch on the back wall behind my listening chair. The black and white wall on the front wall is 3'H. The wall the Callisto's are on there is a sliding glass door that is covered by heavy drapes, on the opposite wall there is a standard six panel entrance door. I have a feeling this room may need some serious work :(

P.S. please don't mind the mess

What are those 2 rectangles on the front left wall?  Doors?  Speakers?  Can they be covered up?

This is a room in my basement. One of them is the fuse box and the other is an outlet to the hose outback to turn the water off for winter. What would you suggest covering them with? Sound panels, pictures, blanket or cloth of some sort??

Also the Lorelei's are about 30" off the side walls and 3' from the black and white wall. There is about 4-5' behind my chair before the couch. I have toyed with the distance of my chair from the speakers and 8-9' feet seems to be best so far.

Have you been thru this?  Almost identical room dimensions.

First reflections first, bass trapping up front next, then work on diffusion and maybe more  trapping in the back later.

You wouldn't believe the improvement in the clarity of your sound stage with a set of Sistrum Platforms SP-004 and a set of Jim Goulding's diffractionbegone wool squares. The wool squares alone would take care of a lot of your side wall interactions for your Scan Speak 9700 tweeters. This I know as I have the same setup for all 4 of my Odyssey Lorelei's. The wool can be dyed to closely match your veneer.

An Eighth Nerve Adapt Series package of triangles for all 4 ceiling corners and Rectangles for all 4 walls & 4 more for the ceiling is a huge improvement for your low ceiling room. First reflection points on both side walls and ceiling also could be treated with diffusion panels and will make you room sound much larger. Bass traps for the front wall would also be nice considering your Lorelei's are rear ported. For diffusion panels for the side/ceiling reflection points, I use Furtutech RWL-1 Room Tuning Panels. I see now Acoustic Revive has the same RWL-2 panel that's suppose to be a notch better,,, and for a notch more.

There's lots of options for room treatment today,,, a huge improvement from just 10 years ago. Same can be said for power conditioning also.  :thumb:

Robin

Thank you for chiming in and the great ideas. I am going to look into the wool squares.

So this weekend I think I am going to start building some bass traps and panels using the corning703 for the 1st reflection points and possibly the ceilings. I will update the thread as the projects get underway.

Thanks again for the insight and starting points!

The room should have some broadband bass control in the corners.  Also, side wall reflections should be addressed.  The last thing would be potentially a couple thicker panels on the rear wall centered behind the listening position to assist with any nulls off the rear wall.  This is probably going to be necessary as your length is almost exactly 3x the height.

Hopefully these will help assist in some suggestions to get this room fine tuned.

Here's my standard blurb, which applies perfectly to your room too:

Room treatment is a deep subject, and a complete answer requires far more than will fit into a single reply here. So here's the short version. All rooms need:

* Broadband (not tuned) bass traps straddling as many corners as you can manage, including the wall-ceiling corners. More bass traps on the rear wall behind helps even further. You simply cannot have too much bass trapping. Real bass trapping, that is - thin foam and thin fiberglass don't work to a low enough frequency.

* Mid/high frequency absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling.

* Some additional amount of mid/high absorption and/or diffusion on any large areas of bare parallel surfaces, such as opposing walls or the ceiling if the floor is reflective. Diffusion on the rear wall behind you is also useful in larger rooms.

For the complete story see my Acoustics FAQ.

There's a lot of additional non-sales technical information on my company's site - articles, videos, test tones and other downloads - linked under my name below.
