I expect to order a ripper half-kit tomorrow.  I love my Cornet2, but have some LPs that I do not have as CDs or on my Mac.

So, I will record using either GarageBand, or Cubase SE, or maybe even LogicPro.  Now my old, old CD-player had a feature that searched for the loudest part of the CD and repeated it so that cassette recording levels could be set.  I assume that too high a signal could also cause distortion when going from LP to computer via the Ripper.  Is this the case?  Or does the Ripper and/or software somehow set the levels accordingly?

I don't think a line-level signal converted to digital via USB will be as problematic an experience as converting from a varyingly-compressed digital format (CD) to a analog medium like cassette tape which requires both setting levels (for appropriate headroom of material to be recorded) and calibration (for the tape type itself).
I know GarageBand has a "line-level" input setting, and I would use that if I wasn't going to use Audacity instead. Either way, the important thing is that you're bypassing the computer's sound card and all the associated jitter.

The RIPPER has a "gain" knob that allows you to adjust for optimum level.  I use the peak detector meters within audacity to help me set.  You can also see the histogram (or whatever it is called) of the music as it plays.  I find it very wasy to set level.

When it does clip, it's not annoyingly bad.  It seems to be handled in a reasonable fashion, although I don't know if it is the RIPPER or the software doing it.
