Possibly the best standard DVD player made so far though:

I have the Oppo 980 (in the bedroom system) which has one.  You can put music on the USB device (although not most MP3 players per the 980 manual and my Zune doesn't work) like a hard drive or thumb drive and navigate thru it with the remote so it's kind of like getting a changer/music server thing.

You can also view images stored on the USB drive via the OPPO

I have the 981HD in my upstairs system, and the 983 on order.  I hope to post comparisons when the 983 comes in.

So in theory, one could plub a usb hard drive through it and play audio files?  would this work even if the oppo is hooked up to a dac? If so that , this would be an interesting poor mans music server.

I hope Oppos improved their USB implementation b/c previously some quirks were reported.  For example, even if you had thousands of songs on your USB device, Oppos would only recognize/play some hundreds of songs only.

I would guess so.  My Oppo 980 is hooked to a DAC (I upgraded my CD source in the main system and moved the DAC) in the bedroom system along with my Sony 2000ES CD/SACD changer.  I prefer the Sony as a transport but it's not like I critically listen and the bedroom system is interconnected to the main system on the other side of the wall (zone 2 output of my current rec'r) and the bedroom feeds 4 other places via a speaker switcher.  I have not tried it yet (my Zune did not work and the manual indicates MP3 players generally don't work) and I may end up with a new bedroom rec'r sometime in the near future (mine is probably about 7 yrs. old) and some of them have usb inputs for MP3 players.  So the USB input on the Oppo was a nice feature that I could potentially use and was an easy choice at $169.  The video looks great on my Vizio 1080p 42 inch LCD.  I only watch a few movies a yr. in there but often I'll watch DVD extras on it vs. turn on the projector in the main system and waste bulb hours.  It's not the worst thing I've heard playing CDs or SACDs or DVD-As but my Sony 2000ES is clearly better playing SACDs or even CDs,

I have not heard from oppo on the date when this player will again be in stock. Anyone have any possible alternatives.  I only need 1080i.  Used or low end pioneer elite?

I'm using my DV-980H in my bedroom for headphone listening.

Although, I passed my DV-970H player down to a family member, I don't recommend getting rid of your DV-980H if you ever plan on passing the DSD signal directly out of the player. The 983 can't perform this function.

Via analog or HDMI?  I am relying on HDMI-based hirez surround on my 980 (DVD-A and SACD, via PCM...which to me sounds better than Oppo's DSD option, so the lack of DSD in the 983 is no great big deal to me)  If the 983 is that much better, then doing a mod to the 980 is not in my options.   :thumb:

Hi Ted,

What receiver/processor are you connecting the Oppo DV-980 via HDMI into? I had completely different results but I probably had a different setup. Thanks and talk to you soon, Doug

I use an Integra 9.8/Onkyo Pro 885.  Kal Rubinson (Stereophile reviewer, documented in his review and on the froums), myself and a number of others like the PCM decoding better in the Oppo than the DSD sent to the Integra/Oppo...frankly by a fairly hefty margin.  It's the only time in my many universal players life (I've owned 7  of them) where this is true.

Hi,

Thanks for the info Ted. I think I know why you like it better, I will try it via PCM when I can, I have a 9.8 coming in soon for mods. Was this strictly 2ch or MC?
