Silverline Sonatas and 30.2 - system advice
« on: 4 Mar 2008, 07:09 pm »
My system presently consists of:

1.  Theta Miles as transport
2.   Benchmark DAC1
3.   Atma-Sphere MP3 as preamp
4.   Atma-Sphere M60s MK II Amps (dedicate 20 amp circuits)
5.   Speltz autoformers
5.   Silverline Sonata I speakers

http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/silverline_sonata.htm

In general, I love the sound of the system, but I have 3 concerns:

1.  The M60s throw off way too much heat,
2.   I do not like using so much electricity, and
2.  At times, I need to turn them down as I believe these "set friendly" speakers (see the review on the Soundstage review) require more of something.

I am thinking of Class D, and I have considered a number of models - though I have not heard any.

Is it likely the RWA 30.2 would be a good substitute for the M60s?

Would there be any problem with an adapter so the MP3 balanced output could be converted to single ended?  Another preamp would be a possibility, but probably not for awhile.

Other amps under consideration are:

1.  Nuforce,
2.  Channel Island
3.  PS Audio Trio (integrated)
4.  Wyred 4 Sound and
5.  Specton.

But, I am interested in auditioning based upon the reviews I have read.  Located in MN, any 30.2 owners here?

Alan

Hi Alan,

Welcome to the RWA forum!

The Signature 30.2 will drive your Sonatas with ease.  With our 30 day (I should call it a 30.2 day  :icon_lol:) trial period, you get the chance to listen to the 30.2 in your system and hopefully you'll have other amps that you are considering on trial as well for comparison.  The 30.2 is in the Class D family (Class T), but it sounds nothing like any of the Class D amps on the market.  It has its own sonic signature that you can't get with a tube amp or solid state amp.  You'll know what I mean when you give it a listen and let it do its thing

There is no problem with this, and there are companies that make cables that have and XLR plug on one end, and an RCA plug on the other.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Just to back up Vinnie's word; The original Signature 30 I had powered a few sets of speakers that shared similarities with the Sonata's. Unless you intend to run full scale orchestra music at realistic concert levels - you'll be fine.

For your interconnects, check out Signal Cable for excellent cables at low cost. You can order a pair of Analog Two IC's with RCA's to XLR's at no extra cost. I've used a set to connect my single ended preamp to my balanced Channel Islands Audio D100's for the past year and they work beautifully.

I am sure the mono blocks would work well with the Sonatas and they go down to 70+wpc into 4 ohms ,the current on demand
makes up for sheer
numbers in watts. Paul.

I meant to say the monoblocks are the best choice if money is not a factor ,the 30.2  can still kick like a mule when called on
one of the best designs out there  go for it.
