Evanescence - "Fallen" (Morse Code?)
« on: 4 Mar 2008, 05:14 pm »
This may be old news to some of you, but I've searched for it here and haven't found anyone talking about it.

If you have a copy of Evanescence "Fallen", listen to track #4 "My Immortal" and you'll hear beeping. Now it's been a couple decades since I took the amateur radio Morse Code test, and couldn't decipher code to save my life, but it sure sounds like Morse to me. After a quick Google search, I found people arguing both sides, "it IS....it's NOT...it IS....it's NOT...."
Anybody out there have this CD that knows Morse code?

There's random, seemingly useless beeps throughout the album, but in this track there's quite a bit of consistant beeping. It's especially noticeable in the quieter sections of the song.

Just curious

an interview with Amy Lee by Adam

We had the chance to chat with Amy Lee, of Evanescence, after the May 20th, 2003 Milwaukee show. We only had a few burning questions for her, all about songs and music she had written. If you listen carefully, during “My Immortal” you can hear a series of clicks at about the middle of the song. "They are supposed to be there," she told us. "WE GET ASKED THAT ALL THE TIME. IT'S NOT A HIDDEN MESSAGE OR MORSE CODE. AND IT'S NOT SOME SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE."

IT'S NOT ... MORSE CODE.

I spent too many hours as a kid listening to ham and shortwave transmissions on my father's Hammarlund receiver wondering what the dits and dahs were to believe this. I've given the track several listens and this is definitely Morse code; I would put good money on that. The band members may not know what all the synth creators put in there, but it is there. Unfortunately, I have the same problem as the original poster. Ever since the code castration from the amateur license requirements, my already very poor code ability went completely away.  :duh: The dits and dahs go by too quickly for me (~20wpm by my estimate) and are too often obscured by instruments and vocals to catch anything more than the occasional letter. What I could get makes the message seem just to be gibberish much like the random Morse used to decorate external Western Digital harddrive cases or a very different language, but the fault in transcription may be my own. Alas, the old hams I knew who could tap out Morse faster than they could speak have become silent keys in the last few years.

I work for a large communications company and when we moved to a new building a few years ago, part of the "interior design" was the company's name in dots and dashes on the office floor using contrasting colors of carpeting. I had no idea until someone pointed it out one day, and then it made perfect sense.    :duh:

Interesting....I've heard this before and I dig the band, so I pulled it up in Adobe Audition to do some spectral analysis.

The morse code line is sitting right about 2650Hz.  That makes it a pain to isolate with my skills in most of the song, but I played with it a bit at the end when it's mostly quiet.

Here's a clip with most of the other sound filtered out and slowed down a bit:

You morse code folks can have fun.  I'm not going figure it out myself.
