favorite cover songs?

What songs do you like that have been covered by other artist? (I'm sort of excluding so called 'standards' that lots of artist have done......but what the heck, throw 'em in if you want)

One of the best I've heard was a live performance by Ryan (not Bryan) Adams a few years ago where he played the piano and sang the Stones "Brown Sugar". It was really slow, and when you listen to the lyrics....really nasty! It was great, a whole new take on the song, which to me is the essence of a good cover.

Ryan does a really nice job w/ Oasis' "Wonderwall" too.

Another one I like is by a sort of obsure band called Ra that did a really rocked up version of the Police's "Every Little Thing"

Joni Mitchell's A Case Of You by a lil Portugese fado singer named Cristina Branco from her album "Ulisses".  Exceptional.  That one is fresh in my mind.  I'll come back later with a couple more.

I agree Time after Time by Miles Davis is dynamite.  Another great cover is Redondo Beach by Morrissey on his Live at Earls Court CD.  Patti Smith is the original artist.

Etta James' version of the Eagles "Take It To The Limit" on her album "Live from San Francisco".  Etta growls this tune half tempo and just nails it.  The Eagles should be banned by law from ever, ever singing this tune again after hearing what Etta did with it. :thumb:

You want cover songs huh? How about cover albums?

Phish, one of my favorite bands, would often cover an entire album during their live halloween shows. Cool concept right? I have a four disc set of one show where they covered the White Album in its entirety in addition to two discs-worth of their own material. I have a similar four disc set where they covered The Who's Quadrophenia in it's entirety.

I also like most covers of All Along the Watch Tower simply because it's a great song.

There's several bands out there that have done that as well, Mary Lee's Corvette covered "Blood On The Tracks"  in a single take live session and Dream Theater has done DSOTM and several others.  There's also a bluegrass band (sorry, don't recall their name) who has covered "The Wall".

Two of the greatest covers of all time:

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix, original artist Bob Dylan

Black Magic Woman - Santana, original artist Fleetwood Mac

Here's a topical suggestion:  any of Jeff Healy's covers.  I really like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from his second album.

Also...

Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower" gets another vote
Aretha, "Respect"
The Bad Plus, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Alien Ant Farm, "Smooth Criminal"

So many....

Thorogood made a very good career doing covers,....I think his covers have been outstanding...especially Who do you Love (Bo Diddley)

Foghat did some great covers of blues songs as well, especially since they didn't do copies they would actually make them rockier. eg. I just wanna make love to you (Muddy Waters)

Stones did tonnes of covers.  Out of all the versions of Robert Johnson's Love in Vain theres' from 95's stripped is my favourite, primarily due to the vocals as many do not put the emotion into this song that it deserves, although I am sure I have not heard them all.

G'n'R did a lot of tribute stuff as well (I view covers as tributes) eg. Bob Dylan's knockin on heavens door

Aerosmith - Train kept a Rollin

I am sure more will come to mind.

Just so happens this one popped up on my random playlist in Foobar and Mark couldn't be more right  :thumb: If you've never experienced this version, you absolutely owe it to yourself to buy this album, if for no other reason, Etta's rendition of Take It To The Limit. This song simply kills and there should be a law forbidding the Eagles from ever performing it again. Gotta trust us on this one fellas

You can even DOWNLOAD it from Amazon for a buck  :thumb:

Stevie Ray Vaughn has done some killer covers

Little Wing

Voodoo Chilie isn't half bad either

...and there is Leave My Little Girl Alone, a Buddy Guy song. This could be another one that the original artist shouldn't ever perform again

....and then there are THE worst cover(s) of all time

...pick a song, any song....one is just as bad as the next (and I'm a Roxy Music fan)

Jimi's version of All Along the Watchtower bested the original, so did Faith No More's version of War Pigs (just MHO).

NIN did a few covers that I can think of, Queen's Get Down Make Love, some 80's dude's Physical, Suck is a Pigface original, can't remember who the original of Deadsouls is.  Most of those aren't on the albums proper.

Forgive this slight twist of the subject, but the Dark Star Orchestra does a great job of covering Dead shows.

Speaking of NIN, Johnny Cash's cover of Trent's "Hurt" is a true gut level interpretation, as is his "Personal Jesus".

The Cowboy Junkies's cover of "Darkness, Darkness" originally? by The Youngbloods.

Tori Amos does excellent covers of Nirvana's "Teen Spirit" and "Angie" by the Stones.
