What im about to say could so easily be dismissed as someone with no listening experience or someone who really hasn't heard what is possible - i have been a lower end audiophile for about 16 years - meaning i have purchased gear and tweaks that range in the $10 to $3000 realm. occasionally i have splurged on a higher end piece (vac renaissance amplifier 30/30) -

I have owned gear from arcam, music fidelity, creek, rotel, polk, spendor, kef, paradigm, yamaha, denon, grado, cambridge, xlo, tara labs, naim, gallo, california audio labs, diapson, avalon, cary, wellboune labs, antique sound labs, cayin, jm labs, ps audio, adcom, alpha core, audio alchemy, audiolab, bedini, cyrus, digital phase, grado, golden tube, jadis, jean-marie reynaud, kimber, klipsch, magnepan, monster, n.e.w,  parasound, red wine, rega, toshiba, sonus faber, sony, sound dynamics, vibrapod and im sure i have forgotten a few.

One piece of equipment - that has actually touched me over the last 8 months - well it is actually two combined units

The Polk audio i-sonic and the cambridge 840c cd player (combined)

In other words I feed the cambridge into the inputs in the back of the polk so that the cambridge is decoding and the sound is coming from the polk. In all my years with so much equipment i have never been so touched by the tone coming form this combo.

The polk http://isonic.polkaudio.com/index.php doesn't image, or have a soundstage, or any of the audiophile type qualities. But what it does have in spades is an equisite tone that i have in all my years listening have never really expreienced so consistently.

I know this is hard to believe - but unless you have heard this combo and the tone that it is offered - you probably think im nuts.

One of the things i find addictive more than anything in audio is tone. (i never realized this)

What really looks like a tabletop radio (but don't dismiss it - you will totally miss the boat) is really an incredible room filling experience that i find quite magical time after time.

The i-sonic by itself also sounds very good and sounds better than half the stuff i have owned or listened to - but the real magic comes when you combine this with the cambridge. I have no doubt that other cd players or dacs would probably sound magical as well.

Im not sure anyone would deem the combo i have - practical or logical - but im telling you this is one of the most incredible sounding combos. In addition my denon turntable - i can feed into the the polk and it too has equisite tone and im sure even a better turntable would blow me out the door.

Im ranting - but i can no longer keep this to myself. - if i could have people over to listen to this - i know they would have their mouths permanently opened wide.

thanks for letting me ramble

The Polk Audio i-sonic is one of those funky products that I would love to spend more time with. My short stint with the unit revealed an ability to render vocals and acoustic instruments with surprisingly good tone. From what I gathered from my brief demo, I'd say it floats more to the euphoric side of town.

As an interesting aside; a few good friends/well respected dealers I know confided that when done right (proper positioning and music) - the i-sonic could hang with their well calibrated 50k+ systems in certain regards.

Naturally, I approach such claims with a good measure of skepticism, even after my positive encounters with the unit. Normally when somethings too good to be true, it often is. That said - I've been wrong before. It is nonetheless something to put on my "gotta investigate thoroughly" list. Enjoy the little i-sonic Smargo,it looks like you've found your hi-fi nirvana at a loose change price!

I don't believe it.   Besides, who cares?

No seriously, this isn't something to joke about.  Smargo was touched by this piece of gear and there's nothing funny about being molested.  We should help him through this difficult time.  Every year hundreds of audiophiles are the victims of inappropriate touching, usually by a piece of gear they know well.

Nathanm,

It may not be wise of me to mention it here for public record, but lets just say - if only my speakers could talk.  The sealed one's are lucky....

Yes brother,

Being touched by tone in your special place is not something to take lightly. Smargo is not the only nut on this board. I'm here too.  :thumb: It is really cool when you get a piece of gear the really does it for you. That is what this is all about.  :green:

I'll keep my Meridian F80.....

But seriously, the world does need more decent music
players for this kind of money.

Smargo-I'm glad this unit sounds so good to you. I'm curious, have you had it long, and have you had any trouble with it?
Reason I ask is because I was looking to buy one,but have been scared off by reports of trouble 2-6 months into ownership. Sometimes with replacements as well.
TIA

Yes you are right - there have been issues even with the replacements - especially one speaker eventually not working (after 3 -6 weeks) when playing a cd. i have 2 i-sonics and have returned both of them - they were replaced with brand new units and I returned both of them as well. The ones that have been manufactured over the last 2-3 months are not having any issues that i am aware of.

They claim they have fixed this problem with the newer units. (if there are any issues that come up -they said they will replace them as well) any older units they are quick to replace them if you are having any issues. in other words, they have been more than amiable about replacing a unit with very little angst.

I have had the isonic at least 8 months already - my 3rd iteration if you will - this my third unit - and this one seems to not have any issues at all (i have had this unit about 8 weeks)

The only reason i have put up with all this crap (quality control issues) is because the unit sounds so spectacular - probably from any other maufacturer - i would have jumped ship long ago.

as an adjunct - the unit im sure from a parts perspective  is a real hunk of junk - compared to what most of us are used to. Im sure everything is so run of the mill. But the synergy and implementation of the unit as a whole is so superior sounding (especially with a good outboard cd player or dac) that you can't help but be astonished at the sound quality compared to all the hype that we have bought into over the years.

Smargo - I apologize for not seeing this thread awhile ago but it appears that you're ok now.

This is from Ken Swauger, our CS guru in Baltimore:

Mark,

We’ve been dealing with a number of them failing, the vendor made some parts substitutions without telling us. Even units we had been sending as replacements had incorrect parts.  But, we’ve been very successful in getting the units back to San Diego and repairing/replacing them.  We’ve set up a pretty smooth operation and have made the whole progress as painless as possible.

Ken
