High Value Speaker Wire Recommendations Please...
« on: 26 Feb 2008, 09:35 pm »
A friend is wiring one of the rooms in his house for home theater.  What high value wire should I recommend for an in-wall install?

Heavy gauge (12 or 10 AWG) and plenum rated...whatever you can find.

Monoprice has great CL2 rated cables if you are not running through plenums

Blue Jeans cables if your friend has deep pockets

I've found the Audioquest FLX 14/4 to be a smooth, detailed cable, and quite a bargain considering the performance.

The Kimber KWIK-12 seems to have a bit more bass but is not as open sounding.

The Monster Cable S144RCL did a decent job from the midrange on up, but for some reason, didn't seem to deliver any bass in my system. Weird!

YMMV, and probably will, but those are my experiences over several months with the same set of speakers and electronics. I was really surprised by the differences since the construction is so similar. I need a life! :-)

Dumb question on the Audioquest. I take it you tie two wires together for + and two for -. Does it matter which ones?

Yes, take a wire and pair it with the one opposite it for each positive and negative run. If you look at the picture on the Onecall site it would be the black/blue and red/white together. From what I've read that's how most of these 4 wire cables are to be connected. If you tie adjacent wires together it will change the electrical parameters a bit, I think rolling off the highs a touch.
