Velodyne DD-10 or DD-12...help me decide!
« on: 26 Feb 2008, 12:04 am »
I've narrowed it down to either of these two subs. The specs are almost identical for the two so I have to wonder what does the DD-12 bring to the table over the DD-10 to warrant the price difference. My room is approx 3000 cubic feet (13x32x7). I will be using the sub for two channel listening. My mains are AAD 2001 monitors. Thanks for any info you can throw my way.

If my experience with the Velodyne HGS-10 and the HGS-12 is something to go by, I went with the HGS-12 because it can play louder and load a larger room better than the HGS-10.  Also, since your room is similar in size to mine, with one HGS-10, I would have to turn the volume control up near max to have the bass level I liked with at the time with my Klipsch Heresy II, KG2 home theater system.  Several times the HGS-10 would "bottom out" and hit its max excursions for the driver.  Upgraded to the HGS-12 and didn't have any problems ever since.

I have a HGS-12 and its a beast! Matches pretty well with my equipment and the bass is tight and articulate. I would think this would be the choice for you, the DD-12.
Besides one amp change my sub has been up and running for 10 plus years. Quality plus!

With a 3000 sq ft room I would go for the DD12.  If your listening room open's up into another room, I would go bigger yet.  I'm not sure if you noticed Velodyne's subwoofer selection wizard but here it is...http://www.velodyne.com/wproduct/whproduct_new.aspx?sid=525y752i

I am familiar with the DD series as I have one.  I have a room a little smaller than yours, but it opens up into the rest of the house.  Initially, I bought the DD12 and had it in my room for about a week , but then thought I was missing a little "oomph", and bought a DD15 to replace the DD12.  There was a pretty big difference but in hindsight, I wish I would have chosen the DD18 instead.

Are you thinking new or used?

Have not heard either, but thought I would chime in.

If this was for HT, I would go for 12" minimum.

But, since this is for 2 ch music, I would lean to a 10" sub.

The 12" would give more impact for movies, but the 10" should be faster (less mass to move), which would be preferably for music.  Drawback is that it will not go as loud.  But I am not a bass head either, I have been happy using monitors with no sub.  So, it depends on your preferences and how loud you listen.  The ideal setup might be two 10" subs.

For that size room, a DD-15" would be the way to go. You got a ton of room, why short yourself?  :thumb:

There is a Velodyne forum and a Velodyne employed guru there named Curt C. Ask him and you will get great feedback. Been in the business 61 years. Off the top of my head, go DD 15 or 18, especially if your monitors are very efficient. I had a DD 12 in a room your size and a side ajoining room with very efficient Klipsch RF-7's and You could not even hear the DD 12. Talk to Chris. Save yourself a serious mistake. Here is a link. I'd suggest considering either the ACI Titan or Maestro XL. ACI builds some real music loving subs. The warranty is about twice the length of the Velodyne warranty. I own a Force XL and love it. They're beautifully built, they're on sale and ACI has their own forum here at AC.
