Revel Ultima Salons...
« on: 25 Feb 2008, 03:53 pm »
I am considering the purchase of a pair of pre-owned Salon's (the original, not the Salon II's).  I'm looking for feedback from any of you who might own these speakers - I would value your opinions and advice highly.  Also, I want to make sure these large floorstanders won't overwhelm my listening room.  The room is a dedicated listening room with substantial acoustical treatments including sound attenuation panels and bass traps.  Dimensions are:  L 20' X W 13.75' X H 9'  These dimensions fit very closely to one of the "ideal" room dimension formulas, but is it large enough for these big boys?

Thanks,

Charles

The speakers are quite deep and have a rear port, so you'd be reducing the available length of the room a bit.  I like the Salons very much.  I think that the high frequencies were set to the -1/2 dB setting the two times that I heard them, and they were set up in rooms bigger than yours but not as extensively treated acoustically.  The primary limitation on my enthusiasm involves listening at lower SPLs, say 70 dB or so.  I've heard them driven by both Goldmund and Halcro electronics, and I felt that at lower volumes--as with a lot of speakers--the bass and dynamic range were severely limited.

I don't own Salons but have heard them.  I agree a room that size would need to be very well treated.  If such is the case, they're great, but depending on what kind of a deal you're getting on a used pair, there might be some better values out there.
