Hello all you OB fanatics...this is my first real attemp at an OB speaker. These OB's are 24"w x 36" H and feature a 4.5" Fostex Fe126e and a Vintage 8" woofer from a pair of old Realistic Nova speakers. They are not crossed over yet,but they sound so good without one, I'm questioning if I should ever use one.My next attemp will be with a 15" or 18" woofer and a small full range driver.http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f382/elfaudio/mystereo016.jpg[/IMG][/img]
Welcome to AC, welcome to the Open Baffle Circle, and nice job on your first run at it.I was not aware that that Fostex driver was applicable for OB, but if your ears are telling you good things, it is working well! When you say that there is no Xover, do you mean that both drivers are running full range? In parallel I assume? How did you make those baffles, what are they made of?Thanks for sharing,

I like it. Especially the idea of matching the two drivers in such a way that you don't need a crossover. On the other hand, if you limit the low frequencies going to your full range driver, you may get better power handling and cleaner sound. I think simillar would apply to your woofer ( less distortion caused by HF if you send it only the LF material). I'm not sure if the magnitude of those benefits would outweigh the drawbacks associated with added complexity of a crossover.I am thinking of something kind of similar but different. OBs using 12" calrad wideband driver with Alnico magnets ougmented with a tweeder or supertweeder. the XO would be a simple capacitor and an L pad so I can tweak the HF response.Let us know how your project progresses.Cheers,Rafal
Hi Audiophile36, Looks good and a bonus they are inexpensive. I'm not trying to be alarming but always feel the responsibility to warn others of my experience with running small Fostex on OB without xo. I tore the voice coils on a FE108EZ that way. Knew it could happen but was enjoying the sound so much I turned it up too high . Was using the Hawthorne Augies and trying different widerange drivers with them. Just wanted to report in. I expect you aren't playing them too loud now, but that .35 xmax doesn't have any protection from over excursion on OB.Anyway, have heard great things about the 126 and may try them sometime.Don
