My second killingest award goes to the Capitols for "Cool Jerk". When this was released I went nuts with my little transistor radio, dancing like a jerk (though not cool) while on duty at my safety patrol post. Its a wonder that no kids got killed when this song came on because my mind got lost in the music instead of getting kids safely across the street.

Cool Jerk, oh take me back to my dim distant youth.  I listened to it on WNJR out of Newark NJ.

I will simply say this; if ever a Cd came out with all the songs that have been mentioned so far; I would pay good old American cash money to purchase it!

the temptations - the way you do the things you do:

You got a smile so bright
You know you could have been a candle
I'm holding you so tight
You know you could have been a handle
The way you swept me off my feet
You know you could have been a broom
The way you smell so sweet
You know you could have been some perfume
Well you could have been anything that you want to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do

As pretty as you are
You know you could have been a flower
Your good looks was a minute
You know that you could have been an hour
The way you stole my heart
You know you could have been a cuckoo
And baby you're so smart
You know you could have been a schoolbook
Well you could have been anything that you want to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do

You make my life so rich
You know you should have been some money
Baby you're so sweet
You know you should have been some honey
Well you could have been anything that you want to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do

You're really swep me off my feet
You make my life complete
You make my life so bright
You make me feel alright

Didn't Chaka Khan have a bad, bad single with The Average White Band in the 70's??  That's bad.  Gslash, you bad.

Some White Girls:

Bonnie Raitt-Love Me Like A Man

Marcia Ball-Another Man's Woman

Judy Henske-Till The Real Thing Comes Along

What is Blues; What is Jump Blues; What Is Soul; What Is Early Rock & Roll?
We are discussing a Genre where all these come together!

I hear ya.  R&B, as I know it, is Texas radio in the 50's.  Early Ray Charles, The Clovers, The Drifters, The Midnighters, etc.  Soul is later like Aretha, Motown, and Memphis, I guess.  Early Rock and Roll is Bill Haley and The Comets, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, I suppose.  Blues is Mississippi and Chicago.  After the 50's, it's harder to tell.  Atlantic, Chess, King, Federal and Duke (in Houston) were progenators of R&B.  Altho Chess was mostly blues.  Atlantic carried on as we all know.  Still, I'm gettin a rush behind some of the tunes mentioned above.  I recently bought a complilation of BB King hits from when he was in his twenties.  On the Virgin label would you believe?

Here's an another white girl, Angela Strehli who Bonnie Raitt calls the real deal.  On "Blonde and Blue" (Rounder), first off is a little autobiographical tune named Two Bit Texas Town.  I know exactly where she is comin from . . "first time I heard the blues on the radio scared me half to death".  She makes a reference to several radio stations to include one in Del Rio, TX.  That would be Wolfman Jack, who broadcasted R&B from Cuidad Acuna, MX (across the Rio Grande) in those days, and a wonderful little bit about Howlin Wolf who blew both our minds.  Jimmy Reed was huge in Dallas then.

Wow...nice thread...lots of good stuff mentioned herein.
Got to throw my hat in with "Vanish in our sleep" and "I'd rather be with you" by Bootsy Rubberband...a must play for me back in the 70's.
Oh yeah, and "Wildflower" by the Newbirth.
Many of the aforementioned tunes certainly sent me back, way back...back before time...a la Jimmy Castor Bunch.
