Felix prototype PCB boards arrive
« on: 22 Feb 2008, 09:53 pm »
The prototype run of the Felix PCB boards has arrived, been test-fitted and photographed.

Front:

Back:

Capacitor test-fit (Vishay F1778 X2 on top, Vishay MKP 338 X1 on bottom):

CoilCraft combo CMC and JW Miller 8100 series CMC:

Dry fit with MKP 338 X1 and CoilCraft:

Dry fit with F1778 X2 and CoilCraft:

Dry fit with F1778 X2 and JW Miller 8118:

Everything fits.  The CoilCraft are a tiny bit tight - they fit fine, but there's enough friction between the pins and holes to hold them on the board.

As you can see, the spacing on the MKP 338 X1 is just about perfect, which means the F1778's are spaced a bit wide.

Question to the group, how many people are interested in a full kit instead of just boards?  If you are interested, what CMC's and caps would you want?  I can't accommodate everyone, but we could do the couple most popular choices.

BTW: I was dumb and didn't double-check the case dimensions.  I also ordered two Serpac 152's, but since I stretched the board to fit the MKP 338's, they don't fit anymore.  Anyone need a couple of Serpac 152's in gray?

Brad,

Very nice work. I would like to order 7 pcbs and 7 CMCs (3x JW Miller 8118-RC, 2x JW Miller 8111-RC and 2x Coilcraft Q4007/5A) and 7 sets of caps (3x MKP338s X1 and 4x F1778s). Thanks for your valuable effort and time.

Wow!

You can put a list, as in how much each bare PCB board would cost and how much full kits would cost. I might just go for 10 boards, just in case I end up using my own parts.

Best,
Anand.

Pricing is going to depend on how many boards we order - the larger the quantity, the greater the discount.  I'm guessing we'll be at $8-9/ea for the boards.  The caps are easy to calculate, the F1778 X2's would be about $6.50/set (1/.1/.01) the MKP 338 X1's would be ~$9/set (assuming we had at least 5 sets).  The CoilCraft CMC's don't really have volume discounts, so it would be around their regular prices ($7/8/9.25 each, depending on values).  The JW Miller 8100  series have a decent discount if we had at least 10 of that value, prices vary from $7-10.  This would put kits in the $25 range each depending on parts (plus S&H and Paypal fees).  These are all estimate numbers and are subject to change.

I'll put up an official group-buy thread, but if you're interested at this pricing level, let me know in this thread or via PM what qty, if you want boards or kits, and if you want kits what type of parts.  Then when I post the official buy thread, I should have more accurate numbers based on quantity discounts.

I would be interested in 6 to 8 boards and may need caps, but I already have CMCs.

Interesting.

The JW Miller CMC toroids should have lower radiated energy than the E-Core.  Should have wide bandwidth as well.  :)

While the prior is probably true, the latter seems like a downside rather than a benefit to me.  The whole point of a power filter is to get rid of all the crap that isn't 60hz.  How is wide bandwidth a benefit here?  I never understood why people argue for wide bandwidth of a toroid for a power transformer either for the same reason.

Great work. You are very patient for doing this.

Count me in for 10 bare PCB boards. That's it. Makes it easy.

Thanks,
Anand.

You want wide bandwidth for the filter to eliminate as wide a frequency band of AC noise as possible.  This is different than the power transformer.

A toroidal power transformer is a wide bandwidth device, this can have it's drawbacks.  An advantage is usually lower mechanical noise than an E-I core transformer.  Another advantage is lower radiated AC field from the toroid.  This minimizes EMI transmission from the transformer into the unit using the device.

I need to do a real test of one of these before I start an official buy, so it will be a few more days.  Thanks for the feedback so far, it looks like we'll have at least 50 boards to order.

If it helps to know now, I would like to order 4 boards and 2 of the Miller 8111 packages.

Thanks again for all your work on this!

I'll take 5 for sure, perhaps 10.

Thanks for all your efforts Brad.

Please put me down for 6 boards.

I will be in Iraq until July, so I will have to pick them up from you this summer.

Can I pay with paypal?

See you then.

Question.  I believe I have read that many are using these for the SB3 switching PS's.  Will they handle enought current for a 100 watt sub amp that uses a switching supply?  Would it be beneficial to use this on a tube amp, a Jolida 102B for instance.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

I guess you can build the Felix with switching PS for 100W sub amp but you need to get a Coilcraft Q4018A/10A. For the Jolida 102B tube amp Coilcraft Q4007A/5A would be the best.
