I have owned the $3000 Ayre, the Quad cdp-2(great player), the Rega Apollo and have demoe'd in my home the Musical Fidelity A5 and the PimaLuna Prologue 8. The Cambridge is still my favorite among them and is sitting in my rack. The biggest downside is a long burn in process but it is an excellent player in my system and can't recommend it more.

Go over to Audiogon and check their chat archives. There's been a lot of discussion about this player from owners.

The 840C is flat out a superb player. I have owned the Consonance Droplet, & a few well regarded DAC's, but the 840C simply is the best sounding source I've had in my system. Also the fact that the 840C has (2) digital inputs that take advantage of it's internal DAC's so it's primed & ready to go when I eventually make the jump to a music server. How great is that!! CA realy did their homework with the design of this unit. For the price of admission for this player (and even if you spent a lot more $$$) I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better overall performong source. Highly recommended!!

Hi,

Well unfortunately its a damn good cdp imo.

I have spent a fair amount of money and have modified a pioneer pds 507 as a transport and it included g & d ckock and digital output modifications.  In total about $600au to be modified to use as a transport.  I have use a perpetual technologies p1a/p3a modwright level 2.

I thought the cambridge audio 840c sounded as good as my digital rig.  My friend bought it new whilst he was on holidays in hong kong for $1100au and I thought it was an absolute bargain.

Regards

There has been some on Audiogon for a while now.  They aren't that much cheaper than list however.

I own the 840C, and I can't be more pleased. If you're also looking to stream music from PC, you can run your intermediary source (i.e. Squeezebox) through 840C's DACs. I run my Squeezebox through 840C, and the sound is really damn good. I haven't had a chance to compare my combo w/ the sound of Transporter, but it's really impressive.

Go to a dealer and talk to him & I'm sure you can pick one up for about $1200, especially if you convince him you're going to be a client for a while. There were some online vendors that were selling 840C for $1175, but the wait was crazy long, I think, and I don't know if they're doing it anymore? You can check... I think they were called "hi fi traders" or something...

Thanks!

I have owned one for the last at least 7 months and continue to be amazed at the quality of sound on hand. It has extremely wonderful resolution and overall musicality!! I have commented about it on audigon over the last few months.

The key to the unit is it's long break-in - If you can hang with it - you will really love it's musicality/

Recently i have moved the unit to a much more rigid platform with round cedar pucks underneath that I got at Bed Bath and Beyond -  Below is the link that you will see the picture of the puck - with the hole in the middle - they also sell these seperatley although i still can't find them on the web site.

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/EnlargeProduct.asp?SKU=13481920&ZMPHT=380/4512113481920P.JPG

This move to the the rigid platform and the cedar pucks have amazingly brought the bass in my system to a much better level of slam and refinement and has opened up the treble so it is much more refined as well.

Im not saying it was lacking in those departments before - but only in comparison did i realize that there is much more to eeked out from this player.

Hope this helps
