Denon DVD-5900. The best out-there.

John, good to hear that the Denon seems like it is going to work out for you, I really want to hear/see one, but my local goodguys doesn't/won't have one on display for awhile. Keep us posted on the quality of the player as you get accustomed to the sound.

Well if you're looking for something to do on the holiday tomorrow you could drop by my place in Antioch. I'll be immersed in DVD Movies, SACD discs, DVD-A discs and CDs throughout the day.

And besides, you can't judge anything by those showroom calibrated sets, not to mention you need to tweek both player and video display to get it accurate; and further not to mention getting the audio calibrated right. You need a home demo dude

I think it's the strongest statement about the audio quality of the 5900

I have had this player for 5 days now whith the majority of 24/7 burn in on SACD along whith a dozen movies.

My initial impression was the sacd sonics were pretty decent but a bit congested.

After around 90 hours of burn in, I can say that as an sacd player, the 5900 is sonically better than first gen players such as the Sony 777 and Phillips sacd 1000.
The 5900 is far superior to the 2900,Phillips 963sa and stock 9000 es in sacd also.
The only player I have heard in my set up that slightly beats the 5900 in sacd is a Modwright signature, and it only wins in inner detail but I believe the 5900 is more dynamic.

As far as video, I can say that in well mastered dvd transfers, this players video is as close to hi def as I have seen on my 7ft wide dlp screen.

This is probably not the best universal there is, but there is nothing even close to this price that would compete to my knowledge.
I am probably going to buy this player if the redbook ends up having the quality that the SACD section offers after some burn in.
I will either modify or have the 5900 modified, and then it will probably be one of the best universals at any price.

I just want to point out that most would be more than happy whith the stock performance of this player.
I have had three different stock/modified players and no how much modding adds to the sonics.
This is why my 5900 will be modified and not because it needs it.

Will post some opinions on the redbook of this player after some run in.

I would be interested in hearing from anybody who has tried Denon link with this player and the AVR-5803 - especially for SACD and DVD-A. Any takers?

Well, I returned the 5900 as I found the redbook performance to be good but definitly not great.
Mods would take care of that but I also had major macro blocking on two dvd's in a row and find this unexceptable.
The movies were Unbreakable and Aliens and the macro blocking is only in the dark scenes but very noticable on a 7ft wide dlp projected screen.

If this turns out to be a bug that gets fixed[as the dealer has suggested] ,I might buy another 5900, but after reading the avs forum, there are many who have seen the macro blocking in dark scenes of several other movies.

If you are thinking about picking up a 5900 you'd better do it soon. I believe that Denon is back-ordered until sometime in February.

There are also at least two on Audiogon for 1500.00 that are not selling....don't belive the hype.

Kris Deering from Secrets did confirm that the macro-blocking "issue" is not an issue at all. I quote him for you:

"Well I don't know what to say people. I have tried all these discs on my player with no problems. I confirmed the blocking problem on the new Meridian and it is there too confirming that it is a disc problem."

Sound clear to me. The 5900 is revealing everything. Denon should be proud to have done a player has revealing has a Meridian player...

Afraid I'm going to have vote thumbs down on the 5900, and Denon players in general. Having gone through two 3800's and two 5900's I'm simply fed up with the sensitivity of their design to less than optimal media, and their varience in quality control. Of the DVDs that I tried in two 5900's the problem remained consistant. No matter how well placed the DVD was in the tray, the moment it started to load up the player went into fits. Grinding noise and intense chassis vibration. Whatever is doing this in the Denon can't be good, at least not for long term reliability of the product. Admittedly after load up and menu selection the vibration/grinding did settle down, but this is simply unexceptable behavior in a $2K player in my estimation.

So I'm back to no DVD player. And after doing some shopping at the local stores I'm at a loss as to what I'm going to replace the 5900 with. Most of the offerings are recordables, vcr/dvd combo's, or very cheapo units.

Well I saw the macro blocking on no less than 6 discs and it could not be repeated whith the Sony 9000, Denon 1600,Samsung hd931 or the Phillips 963sa so I am not convinced that it is the Denon being more revealing and even if it is, don't they check these players before being released.
I watched two movies in a row on the final night in my 14 day trial that both had macro blocking.

I also had the noisey transport gear grinding the one time whith player lock up and found the redbook to be only good and not great.

In the end, I would have had to have full mods done to this player for long term listening and there are many cheaper players that would sonically blow it away whith mods for a lot less money.

I just upgraded to the Denon DVD-5900 from the 2900. Count me in as one that find this player and it's performance stunning. Without mods, the player is phenomenal. Granted, I haven't listened to traditional cds in 2-channel yet but for movies and multi-channel music (dvd-a & sacd [haven't tried dts yet]) it is awesome. I, fortunately, haven't had the issues some of you have experienced thus far.
