Hello Mike - I never was good with colors... :duh:.  I'd say they are closer to bage, than brown.  As for the sound....  I can say this, they are among the very few speakers that were able to have me curl up nice n cozy in my chair fresh out of the box. They sound more like a two-way, and are chalk full of detail and air (in a smooth way). I'm excited to hear what goods these little towers can deliver once a few hours are cooked on the woofers. So far, so good.   :thumb:

So I guess it's safe to say they aren't bright - correct?  I auditioned the Ikon 1&2's a while back and while I loved the speed and timing I knew I would never be able to live with the brightness. The Ikon 6, on the other hand wasn't as bright but lacked the speed and timing of the smaller bookshelves and is too big for my room. The salesman told me the brightness would disappear after break in but I wasn't willing to chance it as a lot of reviews pretty much confirmed what I was experiencing. If the Mentors are as fast and articulate as the Ikons  but without the brightness they might be exactly what I'm looking for.

Turn,

Given the low hours I've logged with the Mentor 5's, I'm not in a position to begin making statements with any kind of authority. I'll have a better story to tell once I've cooked em in and have tried em on a slew of electronics and room configurations. That said, my understanding is that the Mentor series represents a significant step beyond the popular and very affordable Ikon. Of course, anyone would expect as much when you climb up the food chain. As for the high end; I wouldn't refer to the Mentor 5 as bright. At this point, what I'm getting is a upper mid-range/treble that speaks very clearly and coherently, projecting well into the space. It's forward, but not bright. In fact, its a bit more polite than my Totem's - making less than stellar recordings quite enjoyable. Now, back to the break-in process!

Yep John / Wolfy, they sure are sleek, curvy, and downright pleasing to the eye. I must say, these little Mentor 5's belt out some seriously good sound. Truly great stuff - especially when matched with the little inexpensive Vista i84 integrated. It's easy to understand why Dali is one of the most popular high end loudspeakers in Europe.

The Mentors do represent a significant step up from the Ikons. They are much closer to the Helicons (which I own) than they are the Ikon.  I do believe the "brightness" you heard was more to do with the room acoustics or electronics than it was the speaker. I cannot speak directly to the Ikons, but I have heard many Dali speakers and that ribbon tweeter give such a glorious high, I certainly would not characterize it as bright. However, then can be some bloom in the mid-bass...
