Looking for a Johnny Cash CD that rivals Live at Folsom Prison

I'm a huge fan of Live at Folsom Prison, my first and only Johnny Cash CD.  I especially enjoy the uptempo tracks and the duets with June Carter.

I imagine there's quite a few of JC's albums of less than savory recording quality.  I was wondering if there are others like Live at Folsom of similar quality.

Thanks in advance for the replies!

No suggestions, but that is an amazing album.  The sound quality considering the recording space is incredible, as is the music.  It's a really intense album considering the circumstances, setting, everything.  The photos in the package lend a stark perspective to something so rich.

Sorry, back on topic.   :D

Yeah, I haven't even bothered looking at the insert but I can envision one of the guards bringing Johnny some water in a tin cup during the performance.

The other obvious recording that comes to mind is Live at San Quentin; I own both and I definitely prefer Folsom, though San Quentin is very good as well.

Live At San Quentin is a must own

I would recommend some of the later discs that he did with Rick Rubin. While not really uptempo they are powerful recordings. His rendition of NIN's "Hurt" is incredibly powerful.

I don't know how anyone can listen to this and not be moved, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go

American Recording #'s III, IV & V are excellent. I'd probably put IV and V as my favorites

American IV is good.  V is not bad either.  It is fascinating to contrast, his first album Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar (on vinyl) to his last(?) American V: A Hundred Highways.

Yes, I second his performance of "Hurt," an old man's song.  But then, I seem to be spending more of my time listening to dead people sing these days...

Johnny Cash At Madison Square Garden. This was recorded in 1969 but not released until 2002. This is a very good set IMO and the sound quality is pretty decent. He has Carl Perkins, The Carter Family and The Statler Brothers with him as well.

I have not heard all of Cash's recordings and have only a couple dozen of his records.  I've long felt "Now, There Was a Song!" his best.  Classic country with an edge.  Soon, I'm going to compile a list of "Country to which I can listen"--we bluegrass fans are such snobs--and this will be on it.

Don't know how I forgot that one! Good choice

I'll be looking forward to that list and yes, you are correct - we are such snobs
