Greetings one and all from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Me? 62 years old, been into audio for >40 years.  Married (to the same good woman) for >37 years with two daughters, one cat and one dog. Born in Cape Town approximately nine months and two minutes after the old man returned from WWII, lived there for 10 years before moving to what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), 8 years later returned to Cape Town for university. Have been in Johannesburg since 1980.

Main passion is music playback (never learned to play any instruments) and the bits and pieces needed to perform this wondrous function.

Musical tastes: Classical (mainstream mostly); Jazz (most); New Age; Rock from the late 1950's thru to early 1970's.

Music collection comprises ~700 LPs and ~750 CDs.

System (picture):

System (schematic):

Guardian of the remotes:

The listening room is not ideal - 4m x 4m (~13' x 13') with three sides and open arch into the lounge, but, at a listening distance of ~2.5m (8') it's almost near-field.

I look forward to poking around these circles to get something of a "feel" for the group before opening my mouth (metaphorically speaking).

Regards,

DE,

Welcome to AC!!!  It's a very friendly place so we'd love to hear more from you.  Very nice looking system.  I showed my wife your pictures and she thought that was a pretty lucky cat too!

Welcome to AC.  I guess you define the boomer generation or is there such in South Africa?  I am not sure how involved South Africa was in the war.  Very nice system you got there.  How stable is your power grid and do you find AC filtering/surge suppression necessary?

Welcome to AC.  I guess you define the boomer generation or is there such in South Africa?  I am not sure how involved South Africa was in the war.  Very nice system you got there.  How stable is your power grid and do find AC filtering/surge suppression necessary?

Back in the days of WWII, South Africa was still part of the British Empire and, as a loyal colony (mostly), our lads went off to fight - initially and mainly in the Western Desert and after Alamein, in Italy.  Some went to Burma too.

As to the power grid, that's another saga all on its own right now....

Basically we get fluctuations that see the mains voltage shift from its nominal level of 230vAC to as low as 190v and as high as 255v - although not as bad in the area in which I live (typically 220v to 250v).  Over and above the voltage movement, there's also a fair amount of "noise". And that was the case up until about a month ago...

Now, our state-run electricity supply entity (ESKOM) has run into capacity problems arising from two main factors:

a) Since 1994, no additional capacity has been added to the grid, despite an annual demand growth rate of ~10%
b) In December 2007, poor maintenance started to bite and we've seen "unplanned shutdowns" as a result

This has given rise to a situation where ESKOM have had to institute programmed outages by area in a process they define as "load shedding".

The impact is usually a single two-hour cut per day, but occasionally under heavy demand (very hot summer days), we seen two of these two-hour cuts per day.  The outlook for our coming Winter is a bit bleak as the demand here in Winter is a fair bit higher than in Summer.

So, at one level, the noisy lines tend to demand some form of line conditioner (hence the Quintet), while the voltage swings would really only be addressed by some form of regenerator.

This is, however, somewhat academic when the power is off due to ESKOM load-shedding...  (light the gas lamps, grab a book and chill...)

Isn't Nature wonderful?

Have you looked into battery power and get off the grid for audio?  I have seen amps, preamps and digital source run on BPS.  I think Teres has BPS for TT as well.  You could run your audio system even when power is out.

Battery power is something I've not really seriously considered so far....   :o

What I have been looking into is a diesel-generator to provide power for the whole house - particularly as the feedback from ESKOM is that the current demand versus supply situation is only likely to resolved by 2014!!!!!  This will require a generator capable of delivering a 3-phase 380 volt supply at ~100 amps - a not inconsiderable investment!!!

 :(

Against this backdrop, an audio-only solution may be a bit tricky to run past the wife and girls...  :nono:

The real "must have" home addition down here right now is a generator  . These are selling like hot cakes, connected directly to the house supply to switch over within 20 second of power out. Of course, there is the issue of supply and demand driving up costs for these right now, as well as less than competent entrepreneurs attempting to kill and maim and burn down houses from unsafe installation of less than safe Chinese generators.

I recently put in a PS Power plant to save my equipment from some really weird pulses, as well as the surges inherent when power comes back on. A lot of the noise on the lines is from Eskom and the Metro's using the mains cables for remote telemetry, the grid forms part of their SCADA network. It's somewhat ironic that the power grid is used to black us out.

Cheers from Durban

Welcome to AC.  I love your system diagram! What a great idea. Your system looks great and I bet it sounds better than it looks, too.
