Before you tell me that OSX does not need to be defrag just know that my previous external HD ran better after a defrag and so did my Desktop.

Does anybody know of a freeware defrag software for MAC?

at least windows has built in defrager

Not sure about OSX but I know Vista defrags in the background on a continuous basis.

I dont think there is an defrag program for free. I use iDefrag which is $35.00 and a great little program.

AFAIR, Panther and later defrags in the background. I don't know of any freeware apps, but I've heard good things about Drive Genius and  iDefrag (I haven't tried either).

 I have used the demo version of iDefrag,just as a means of seeing what condition the HD is in.

The process that comes closest to defragmenting in OS is called Optimizing as far as I know. I use a program called Onyx. It's free and can be found at Version Tracker ( www.versiontracker.com ) and probably at other sites. Within the program there are a number of options. I use Automation which performs a number of procedures and gives you the option of choosing Optimization.

OS X defrags all files over 4mb. That said, I have used iDefrag (run from a bootable disk, an HD volume cannot defrag itself) with good results. In fact, it took NOWHERE near the amount of time reported in the blog link above. But I have 1.2 gb of ram, who knows what his 800 G4 had...

Tried Onyx.......
I find it the same as "system optimizer X" (another freeware)

Now..... have ....to...... CONVINCE... myself.....to pay....for.....iDefrag........

The optimizing isnt the same as defragging though. Defragging can take a while depending on the options you choose under preferences and if you are doing a full defrag or just an online defrag.

OS X defrags all files over 4mb.

Over 4GB and up to 20GB. It leaves anything over 20 for you to deal with manually.

Just copy your files over to an empty drive and then return them to the original drive. You'll do 90% of what any utility does.
