Turntable recs please...
« on: 10 Feb 2008, 04:31 pm »
Hi. I'd like to ask you for recommendations for turntables. Driving Harbeth Super HL5 with Leben CS600, and I am going to purchase a Leben phono stage that is coming out in March. I already have a cartridge I'll be using: Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood MM (will go LOMC down the line, when I'm more familiar with my equipment.)

I was looking at perhaps Kuzma Stabi S or Nottingham turntables, and would appreciate your recommendations on TTs that might be optimal for my system. I'd love to do a Garrard 301, but restoration is something that is way over my head right now...

Anyway, thank you!

Sonny

Hi. I already own a cartridge I plan to use (Clearaudio Virtuoso MM). For the turntable, I was looking to spend around $2500 - $3000, but of course, if there's a table that's cheaper (i.e. Audiogon) I'd be happy, too!

Thank you!

If you are looking to spend that kind of dough you owe it to yourself to try a few different models before spending any money...do you have any dealers nearby? Take a few different decks home on loan (might have to put down a deposit), and spend a little time with them. Different types will work/sound differently and there is no universal "best" choice.

Yeah, I'm going to audition gear with friends on 2/22. Going to a few dealers around Manhattan. Just wanted to narrow down my options.

A Rega is always worth a shot. Might as well try a VPI too. They sound markedly different and chances are you will lean strongly to one or the other. Not familiar with either of the two you first mentioned, unfortunately.

I have had the cheap Nottingham Horizon turntable for the last few years and find it fantastic!  You can't do wrong buying a Nottingham turntable.  The Kumza turntables do look nice too!

Here is a great place to start. My good friend Geoff Husband over at TNT did a series of table comparisons, many in your price range. The series is very straightforward comparing all tables to his Orbe in a simple + or - subjectively better or worse scenario broken down into about 10 or so categories.

Scroll down to the Analogue Stuff and the saga begins.

Geoff has a very good ear and has cost me many thousands over the years  :|

Take a look at the Galibier Design Serac. I own a Gavia, and love it. According to Thom, the Serac gets you 80% of the Gavia. Down the road if you want to get into a better table, there is the upgrade path that Thom will accomodate. It is a bit more then your stated budget, but worth a look.

Good Luck,

Thanks a lot for your input, guys! The TNT analog reviews are new to me & endlessly fascinating. I can easily lose myself for hours there. Reading through the TNT, I noticed Geoff Husband's preference for Michell Orbe. While I probably can't spring for the Orbe, the Gyro SE is w/in my range. Anyone w/ experience w/ Michell turntables?

that budgit is really tighter than one might think. Problem is that in that price range most wont come with an arm. But here's a handfull of must sees:
* A Mitchell Orb is a good start, or even a Gyro. These guys don't build junk
* if you can find a nice used Acoustic Signature Final Tool (setup for a Rega arm) your looking at something that'll last a couple lifetimes, and they are really a nice sounding table. (I own one as well as two others) It's a table you setup and forget.
* a VPI Scout (I like the Final Tool much better) but still a fine unit
* The new Marantz built by Clearaudio (about $1500 ready to go)
* a good used Basis
* an Acoustic Solid (a final tool clone)
* an Opera Consance with a Rega arm (or a Origin). I have one of these playing right now. It's a well made turntable, but The Final Tool is better
* a good Sota (sometimes can be had with the vacume used).
if it were me I think I'd go with the Marantz and save the $1000 for LP's

what I'd avoid:
* Music Hall anything
* Linns
* Regas are nice but also can be a chore unless you buy one of the better ones
