My transport died so i picked  one up last week for 30 bucks.  Out of the box it was listenable but the high hats were classic digital hash.  Well ive given it a week left on continiously and tried again.  I have to say its getting much better. I now firmly believe the hype is real.  No time to describe in detail, but very involving and for  some reason a bit more "soulful" then much of the digital set ups ive used. The upper treble digitis is much reduced. Note this is stock, without any jacks cleaned, and on top of a quad of mapleshade cork footers.

I await a ps audio power punch c9 cord for further opinion.  Thus far in my 30 year audio journey i cant yet resort to a fuse upgrade....

As a previous owner of one of these, IMHO, it is nothing special.  It filters in all the right places and emulates a "certain" sound.  Very brilliant design no doubt, but not my cup-of-tea.  Makes me feel like I've been sucker punched. 

sucker punched as in digital fatigue? or as in suckered by the hype.  I respect your opinion, most audio is subjective.  But for 30 bucks...not too bad. PS dont have fatigue myself with this thing....thus far listening 2 hours max to date

More like the sound - it sounds good, it's just not all there.  I guess what I'm trying to say, is that the sound draws you in, but never really delivers.  Kind of like a super model     Not that I would know

I'll come out of the closet and confess I'm using one.  You could spend more, a lot more and do worse.  As things go, I'm more value focused then ever before.  After 25 years of throwing too much money away in audio, it's nice to know there are some things that work very well for next to nothing.  It may not be your cup of tea, but so what.  I tried a Michael Mardis modified Trends and found it unlistenable.  Too each his own.

i continue to be impressed with this little sucker.  I think that if you value tonality, listenability, and "roundness" and lack of digitus/fatigue you may be impressed.

If you are looking for air,  imaging and soundstaging and thunderous bass best spend your 40 bucks elsewhere.

A PS2 "dvd" remote control off ebay for 5 bucks, solves the absurd wired remote kludge....

PS-Threw on a ps power punch PC. Has changed the sound at the extremes and added nice detail. A change yes. For the better....have to give it a few more weeks b4 passing any real judgment.

particularly when mated with a RWA sig 30!!!

PS Vinnie- after almost 2 years i really like the sig 30 (orig edition) behind a tube pre....just my flavor preference

Try comparing the RCA output to the AV output.  The AV output bypasses some cheap op amps in front of the RCA's.

I agree with Vinnie, the more time you spend time with the Playstation SCPH 1001, you realize that it's not only warm, rich and musical but it's also very detailed. I picked one up for $16.00 (would of paid more) and it's the only source I listen to now. I have it hooked to my Trends 10.1 amp using the RS 22GA. red magnet wire formula and Yardmaster formula speaker cables mated to my sons KLH monitors. It's a killer bedroom/office system that continues to amaze me.  The only downside is the PS1 will only play original cds, it won't read anything else ( CD-Rs won't work). I am a huge of John Potts (6 moons) system and would love to hear how it sounds, some day (or build one of my own).

thanks for the AV Out reminder. I had forgotten about that. I happened to have the stock AV cord with one of my
Playstations so tried it last night before going to bed. I really didn't expect this cheap cable to sound as good as my anti-ICs
running from the RCAs but damn if it didn't take everything up another notch. Detail, timing, balance...all remarkably
improved. Now I've started searching online for an AV cable upgrade. What about a DIY version using the Yardmaster?

curious as to compare the rca outs to a high quality av out.....but i dont think anyone makes one off the shelf....in any event i ordered an audiophile fuse, just so i can put that nonsense out of my head..i will  "caig" all the outputs and replace the fuse next week and report back.

i cant reccomend the 5 dollar ebay dvd remote fast enough for this thing.....its a no brainer

Even with the cheap supplied AV cord, the difference between the AV out vs. the RCA's is night and day.  Forget about going thru the RCA's with high end cables, it's not even close.  If you haven't heard the PS1 thru the AV outs, then you have no idea as to what the PS1 is capable of.

Does anyone make a decent AV Multi Out cable or is this a use the supplied el cheapos or roll  your own type of thing.

I picked up an A/V cable at a Sony store this afternoon. I've only had it hooked up for an hour or so but it does seem
to be an improvement over the stock A/V cord that came with the PSOne. Based on my day or two of internet searches
there doesn't seem to be much out there. Maybe someone like Wayne at Bolder Cable would come up with something.
I'd definitely like to squeeze as much as possible out of my PSOnes before moving on to some HD based setup down
the road. I like my little grey box.
