Very cool....the shunt filter, that is the L || R in series with the cap?  I thought that might be some kind of zobel, but I am still pretty new at spotting filters. 

What's the S14K250?  That is an unfamiliar schematic symbol to me.

When I learned Electrical Industry Engineering in West Germany (before the wall demolition) the German built their industrial circuit with regarding high protection for technicians and workers. The varistor acts as a circuit protection like a X-cap I guess, correct me if I am wrong. Here is a link:

That made it clear.  Basically it shunts (or short circuits) transient spikes, where voltage exceeds the nominal voltage.
