Are these prices in 1789 dollars?  That's $0.70/CD for Bach and Mozart, or about 1/20 of the current price for Britney Spears.

Oh, and here's a working link: http://www.daedalusbooks.com/Products/Detail.asp?ProductID=55970&Media=Music&SubCategoryID=&ReturnUrl=%2FProducts%2FSearch%2FHomeQuickSearchResult%2Easp%3FSearch%3DBrilliant%2BClassics%26Media%3D%26image1%2Ex%3D0%26image1%2Ey%3D0

You've got to be real careful with these large boxed sets. They usually come from a variety of sources, some of which probably aren't very good. But at these prices even if only a small portion is well recorded it's probably a good bargain.

B & N has comparable price.  Just wait for one of their 25% to 30% off one item coupon to pop up.  I used them to get the Mozart and Beethoven.  I will use another one on Bach later. http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=50009.msg448681#msg448681

I'd like to hear from any who have bought these regarding their quality (recording and/or performance).

They are absolute bargains.  Some pieces are 1st class, mostly good and a few just passable.  I like them for the obscure pieces that never get play otherwise.  I already have several versions of the more famous pieces anyway.

Hi All:

I studied chamber music with members of the Guarneri String Quartet and also the Budapest String Quartet.  I believe that the Guarneri is the quartet that is performing on the Beethoven CD set.  Let me say that you would be hard pressed to find a better rendition of the complete Beethoven string quartets which includes the Grosse Fugue.

As I recall, the record set of the Guarneri perfoming these quartets cost around $75 by itself!!

Cheers,

rklein

Good grief that's a deal.  Looks like I'll be force feeding myself classical music for a while...I just bought the Bach and Mozart box sets.  That's 325 discs for less than $300 with tax and shipping.

Are these legal and made in America and not Asian/Russian rip offs?  Isn't some one getting severely screwed out of royalties here?

Many of the best performances of classical works are from the 40s through the 60s and I would imagine that many of the performers are no longer around. I'm not really sure how, or if, royalties are paid for orchestras. Just because many no-talent, so-called performers are "way" overpaid doesn't mean that everyone makes that much money, or that they should.

Best Regards,
TerryO

I hope the recordings are reasonably good.  Guess I'll be finding out shortly.
